When Derek Jeter left the ballpark for the last time, the entire baseball community celebrated his 20-year-long career with the Pinstripes. However, the cause behind the celebration wasn’t his unending list of achievements, but the kind of impact the five-time World Champion had in New York, on New Yorkers. And amongst these New Yorkers was the shortstop’s ex-girlfriend, American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, who fell prey to Jeter’s poise and charisma inside and outside the ballpark.
Their relationship, which began in 1997, lasted only for a year, but Jeter’s influence on the Queen of Christmas was such that she wrote not two, but three songs based on the future Yankee legend. And while the entire world knows about “My All” and “The Roof”, the revelation of a Jeter reference in a third song was a surprise, which arrived in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

As Carey reveals in her memoir, the song “Honey” which she released in 1997, included a hidden mention of her beau Derek Jeter, who she dated during that period. “Honey,” which is sampled from The World’s Famous Supreme Team’s song, “Hey DJ,” was amongst the favorite songs of the pop-icon. And obviously, so was Jeter.
Two lines from the song Honey recite, “Hey! D.J. just play that song / Keep me dancing (Dancing) all night long.”
However, the “DJ” mentioned in the lyric was a subtle mention of Yankee shortstop and New York favorite Derek Jeter. In her memoir, Carey attests to this. She says, “I told them I also wanted to include the 1984 hit. Little did they know it was a secret shout-out to Derek Jeter.”

Without any doubt, Jeter’s imprint on Mariah Carey’s heart was evident. And their relationship supposedly began during the concluding half of Carey’s abusive marriage with ex-husband Tommy Mottola. As a result, the minute the end of their wedding became official, Carey reached the airport and hopped on a plane to Tampa to meet Jeter at the Yankees’ spring training facility.
