The Philadelphia Phillies have been missing the presence of one of their star players, right fielder Bryce Harper, this year. Injuries plagued the 30-year-old last season. After a broken left thumb made him miss 58 games last year, Harper made 10 plate appearances in two Triple-A games. But then his temporary minor league career came to an end he rejoined the Phillies. Later that year, the Phillies announced that Harper would need Tommy John surgery and miss part of the 2023 season. In fact, the team said he would be going back to the minor leagues until he recovered.

Recently, after consulting with doctors, the Phillies put Harper on the 10-day injured list. The reigning NLCS MVP can probably return to his batting duties before he can start throwing. But Rob Thomson, the Phillies manager, just gave an even more exciting update.

On Saturday, April 15th, Thomson spoke to The Philadelphia Inquirer about Harper’s future. Bodies and injuries unfortunately don’t have a fixed timeline. But thankfully for fans, the Phillies player seems to be doing well and is on his way to recovery.

“I really don’t know if he will go on an assignment,” Thomson said. “I mean, if he’s swinging the bat well and he feels good. I say why waste it?”

The DH had the same idea but made sure to make it clear that he believes Triple A has a lot of talent. However, he still thinks big league games are different, which is what Harper needs more of right now.

Harper’s new position means Philadelphia Phillies fans may see him sooner rather than later

It was announced a few days ago that the right fielder is training to play at first base, a completely new position for him. But since batting is easier than pitching after his shoulder surgery, it might increase Harper’s chances of making it back to the big leagues quicker.

The 30-year-old will still play as a designated hitter, the Phillies assured fans. Last season, Harper was instrumental in taking the Phillies to the NLCS. Fans are hoping he comes back to MLB soon to resume his powerful playing. Maybe another trip to the postseason?
