Are things heading south for the North Siders? Despite being favorites to sign Cody Bellinger, the Chicago Cubs have not taken the final step to meet his price. While this could be a sign of them being financially smart, this could also be an apparent lack of killer instinct inside the Cubs. Perhaps that’s why the potential entry of the Philadelphia Phillies is so scary – they can sign Bellinger and they have solid reasons to do just that.

While the Cubs and Phillies are on relatively equal grounds when it comes to their resources, the teams are on a different trajectory. While the Cubbies are looking to end their postseason drought, the Phils have become perennial competitors for the World Series. So there’s a major reason to worry for the Cubs.

A major twist in the Cody Bellinger to shake everything back to life

While Bellinger and Cubs have been in talks for months, their discussions have been slow. Instead of increasing, the pace has continuously decreased. With the above $200 million demands of Cody Love being too much for the North Siders, their train isn’t leaving the station. But the entry of the Phillies could act as a wake-up call for everyone involved, especially the Chi-Town squad.

Fansided noted, “So long as the price is reasonable, Bellinger can help the Phillies reinforce their unique intimidation factor in the batter’s box.” But more importantly, “Bellinger should be able to find his groove in Citizens Bank Park.” These two statements are an alarming sign for the North Siders and their quest for playoffs. This is probably the first time a team has emerged that could be just as beneficial to Bellinger as they are. 

The primary reason for the Cubs being favorites was because Bellinger rediscovered his best form while being with them. Their coaching staff forged a special relationship with the slugger and showed him the ropes which ultimately proved to be beneficial. While this is reason enough for Bellinger to go for them, the Phillies can provide him with a similar environment.

In fact, one could argue that the Phils have a better lineup across the board. What we’ve seen is that Cody Love excels when the spotlight isn’t completely on him. That’s precisely what can happen in Philadelphia. 

Two great launchpads for Cody Bellinger – which one will he choose?

In the Phillies Cody Bellinger will be surrounded by Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber, among others. The more the elite bats around him, the lesser the pressure to perform and this is precisely where Bellinger excels. But then, the Cubs would provide him with a known environment where he knows he can excel. Also without him, the Cubs’ playoff hopes become a little damper. 

So will Bellinger choose familiarity or will he choose a star-laden roster? While the Cubs are focused on youth, the Phillies want to win now. In this battle of two wildly different teams – Bellinger is stuck in between.
