On one hand, his love for his team was evident. On the other, his vague answers about his upcoming contract negotiations concealed underlying information. Here’s the thing. Alonso’s enthusiasm for the Mets remains unquestionable. His words of fondness directed at his teammates, coaches, and the overall team culture only emphasized this desire to contribute to the team’s success further.

The 29-year-old even mentioned his aspiration to reach the playoffs and “have the best four at-bats I can every single day.” But is there any knowledge nugget one can draw about his impending contract? No.

Alonso’s not-so-definitive answer about what happens following the 2024 campaign fuels a certain level of speculation. While fans wish to believe that he remains with the Mets, thanks to his stellar performances in the past, there is undeniable ambiguity about the same. Alonso, who was eligible for arbitration (a third and last time), okayed a $20.5 million contract per source. Last season, he earned $14.5 million through the process of arbitration.

2024 would be the final year of team control for Alonso. 2023’s stats show that he hit .217/.318/.504, 46 homers and 118 RBIs. Sure, there has been a mutual interest from both sides, but no concrete indications have come to light that reflects a closure on the extension. Understandably so, negotiations, more often than not, involve strategic maneuvering and calculated silence. One must wait and watch.
