The New York Mets have just handed a whopping 15-year, $765 million deal to Juan Soto. However, they don’t have time to stop; the next big thing on their agenda is getting back the fan-favorite Pete Alonso. The four-time All-Star is one of the most stellar first basemen in the sport. Plus, he just turned 30, so he still has some good years left to play at maximum potential. Steve Cohen wants him back, and as per Newsday’s Tim Healey, Cohen said, “We think he’s a great Met, and we’re still engaged. We hope he stays as a Met. … He’s entitled to go out, test his market, and see what it is. Hopefully we’ll get there.”
Mets general manager David Stearns reassured fans that Juan Soto’s massive contract won’t get in the way of a possible reunion with Pete Alonso in free agency. He told reporters on Monday, “Our ownership has consistently shown that resources will be available when we need them.” Sounds promising, doesn’t it for the fans? But it seems like not everyone is buying into the Mets’s interest and statements, at least not Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal pours water on Mets’ chase for Alonso

Ken Rosenthal didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on Pete Alonso’s future with the Mets. He explained that while the Mets have once again reiterated that they want to keep Alonso, it’s more what they have to say than what they really mean. “They’re going to say that until he is gone,” mentioned Rosenthal. And he also gave his reasons. First, they can’t say they don’t need Alonso, because it’s going to violate the collective bargaining agreement.
Secondly, it’s a bad PR move, because Pete Alonso has been a cornerstone player for the team. While Alonso has had a topsy-turvy 2024, since his debut with the team in 2019, he has racked up 226 home runs. Rosenthal isn’t convinced the team values Alonso enough to make this deal work out. “I’m not sure that the Mets value Pete Alonso the same way Pete Alonso and Scott Boras value Pete Alonso,” said Ken Rosenthal on the Foul Territory podcast.
However, Rosenthal mentioned that the 30-year-old slugger can stay with the New York Mets but probably needs to agree on a lesser deal. And it seems like he might stay in New York but just not with the Mets!

The New York Yankees eye Pete Alonso
The New York Yankees have moved on from the Juan Soto heartbreak. And it seems like they might want a tit-for-tat situation because rumors about them being interested in Mets’ Pete Alonso are coming around. Given that there are certain gaps in the lineup with Soto and Anthony Rizzo leaving, Alonso can be a perfect fit. They need someone at first base, and it’s an area they struggled with, making Alonso filling that gap make more sense.
Mike Puma of the New York Post believes that if the Mets want to keep Alonso, they’ll need to dish out more cash. “If the Mets genuinely want a reunion with Alonso and are not simply talking a big game to avoid backlash from fans, it will likely have to pony up the cash to keep a guy who has been one of the most popular stars on the team since his arrival five years ago. Prediction: Alonso stays in New York, but as the first baseman for the Yankees,” said Puma. Spotrac has pegged Pete Alonso’s market value to be $174 million for six years. Several teams are interested, and it’s not just the New York Yankees. From Mariners, Nationals, Astros, and more; all have their eye on the star first baseman.
