The MLB Polar Bear suffers another major setback! The New York Mets’ first baseman, Pete Alonso, is in awe after his team made a rather shocking move. He has been long associated with the team; however, his recent mediocre performance and Pete being 30 years old make him an unlikely choice for the Mets. But will that move cause a major gap in their lineup?

For the team, filling a potential Alonso gap at first base is always challenging. However, they have held their heads high, looking confident of the move that they made. But, amidst the declining first base market, the name of a team is coming up that’s eyeing Alonso. It is the Toronto Blue Jays?

Pete Alonso’s time with the Mets seems to be coming to an end after they put faith in their third baseman, Mark Vientos. They feel that he has the potential to fill the gap that may be generated by Alonso’s departure. A top MLB insider, Ken Rosenthal, said on the Foul Territory, “I’m not convinced the Mets want Pete, and the reason I say that is because there are offers. Three years, $68 to $70 million—that’s not an offer he is going to take, and they know that.” Pete declined the offer; however, the first base market is not something like it used to be earlier.

He went on to add that Freddie Freeman and Prince Fielder signed much higher contracts a few years ago. Thus, offering something that low for a player of Alonso’s calibre doesn’t make sense. Isn’t it? Ken Rosenthal said that if the Mets wanted to have Pete, they would have made a better offer, but, sadly, that didn’t happen. This makes Mark Vientos the likely replacement for Alonso. He has first-base experience in 14 major league games and 70 minor league games. But that’s certainly not enough to fill that Alonso’s void, right?

It isn’t, because Mark Vientos was minus-five in outs above average when he played at third base, which pushed him to the MLB’s sixth percentile for range. However, he has shown some potential with his hitting power, and Mets coach Mike Sarbaugh is hopeful of him doing just fine, wherever he plays. The Mets can also groom him to be a regular first baseman, although they may have to move Baty to the third base. As for Vientos, he will be looking to make the most of the chances he gets; however, it will be too early to make a call on whether he is a potential replacement for Pete or not. But there is a team that’s eyeing Alonso—the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays look to boost their 2025 lineup with an All-Star addition

Yes, you hear that right! The Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as a potential contender for first baseman Pete Alonso. Although the Mets haven’t closed the agreement yet, the reunion seems unlikely, with them trying to put Mark Vientos as a possible replacement for Pete. The Blue Jays need a good power-hitter after they finished last in the AL East with a 74-88 record. Thus, the addition of Pete makes a lot of sense.

However, even if they get Alonso, they may not trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He has been one of the best young players in the Blue Jays lineup, hitting 30 home runs, a batting average of .323, and knocking in 102. With the first baseman addition, they could play him in third base, where he loves to play, and even play both of them as designated hitters. It would also increase their chances of making the playoffs and also bolster their lineup in 2025.

However, it is too early to tell whether the Blue Jays will be able to get Alonso or not. Fans are even speculating about Pete’s return to the Mets; however, that looks unlikely. Which team, do you think, is maybe the landing spot for Pete Alonso, and why? Let us know in the comment section below.
