This off-season, something surprising has happened, and no it’s not the Juan Soto deal. Teams didn’t fall for famous agent Scott Boras’s gameplay of – waiting it out! Oops. This is a thing that already happened last year when many of his clients waited too long to sign and had to settle. And even now this has continued, and surprisingly, Pete Alonso is still playing a game of musical chairs right now. Even though he is such a strong bat and in MLB stands only next to Aaron Judge, he still hasn’t found a home.
New York Mets fans are left scratching their heads. Because many thought Alonso would be a perfect partner for Juan Soto on the team. Together they can get the team into the championship, as Steve Cohen wants. But Heyman revealed there is a “sizeable gap” between what Alonso wants and what the Mets offer. Turns out $90 million is what the Mets offered, and Alonso wants $200 million. However, Heyman mentioned that since then, development has taken place between the two parties.
Doors to New York open for Pete Alonso

For quite a hot minute, it seemed like the doors for Alonso were slammed shut by the Mets. But then, they might have been playing the game of Scott Boras itself, the game of waiting. The market is now dried up, and almost everyone from Christian Walker to Cody Bellinger has found their home. They might have hoped Alonso settled for something reasonable in terms of dollars and the years too. And it seems like they have been negotiating with the fan favorite again, as per Heyman.
“I think there is some hope now… there is certainly still a gap in the negotiations. I think they’ve bridged a few things. They’ve compromised a bit.”

Jon Heyman, talking to PIX11 Sports, mentioned that the New York Mets and Alonso are in constant contact. He said, “I think there is hope now to hopefully get something done… there is certainly still a gap in the negotiations. I think they’ve bridged a few things. They’ve compromised a bit.” He mentioned that Mets and Alonso have been in a great marriage over the past six years. However, he did mention there is no guarantee of the negotiation. For now, he said, the Mets are Pete Alonso’s best option and vice versa for the New York Mets.
Other teams still need help at first base, for example, the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins. But the high price of Alonso, plus the amount of years he is asking for, is too much for them. Pete Alonso is 30 years old, so a long deal is risky. Injuries and a performance decline are seen after the age of 30. But hopefully, Alonso being a Met fan favorite will help him get a lucrative deal, if not exactly what he is asking.
Scott Boras offers the Mets a new deal for Alonso
Fresh news about Pete Alonso’s sweepstakes is in! So as per the Athletic, Scott Boras has submitted a three-year contract to the New York Mets on his client’s behalf. This deal, as Athletic mentioned, is to be valued at $93.3 million with deferrals that reduce its present-day value. The key highlight is the proposed $31.1 million average. That would set a record for first basemen overtaking Miguel Cabrera’s $31 million AVV of his eight-year and $248 million extension with the Detroit Tigers.

Even Jim Duquette, citing legal sources, has confirmed this news. He even mentioned opt-out options on the deal. Now this deal has been offered exclusively to the New York Mets. Right now, though, the financial details of it remain unclear. News about how the Giants are also in the picture is coming in, but a reunion between Alonso and the Mets seems to be the most logical thing.
If this contract is analyzed, it’s both flexible and beneficial for both sides. Alonso can opt out if he wants a good deal next off-season. Or he can take this year as a prove-it year and raise his value, much like Bellinger did.
