Home/MLB

If Pete Alonso were playing musical chairs right now, he’d be the last man standing. It’s harsh but the reality of the unpredictable off-season this time around is unmatched. Like many fans, even MLB insider Ken Rosenthal had believed that Alonso would re-sign with the Mets. In Fair Territory’s podcast, he said, “The entire industry believes [the Mets] are going to re-sign Pete Alonso.” Even Jim Bowden of The Athletic mentioned that the deal could happen “sooner rather than later.” But well, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Recently, Jon Heyman updated that the New York Mets and Alonso aren’t on the same page. In a New York Post article, he mentioned a sizable gap between Alonso’s asking price and the Mets’ offer. And well, Heyman is right because the gap surely is substantial, as the Mets offered Alonso just $90 million! That’s a surprising number given Alonso was looking for $200 million or more. Right now, doors are closing in at first base, but Alonso still has some options open, and according to Heyman, it might be the doors to Seattle.

Is Pete Alonso headed to the Seattle Mariners?

Jon Heyman mentioned that there is still some market for power hitters. While like Pete Alonso, Anthony Santander hasn’t found a new home, there are players like Teoscar Hernandez who headed back to LA. Heyman mentioned that the Mets reuniting with Alonso is no guarantee. But Heyman said, “The Mariners are another team that needs offense,” suggesting that Alonso could make it to their roster. However, Heyman did point out that Mariners Park is a rather difficult park for right-handers. So it’s difficult for free agents to go play there. But he isn’t the only one suggesting the Mariners.

Jim Bowden is pitching the Mariners as an option, too. In a December 6 article, Bowden said, “The best single move they (the  Mariners) can realistically make is signing Alonso, putting his 40-home run bat behind Julio Rodríguez in their lineup.” According to Bowden, Pete Alonso isn’t just a fun personality but also can perform in the biggest moments, making him a great choice. Bowden even predicted that Alonso would sign a 7-year deal for $189 million with the Mariners. Well, sure, Mariners’ Park isn’t a right-hitters paradise, but Alonso’s consistency and power may be able to overcome it.

Could Polar Bear head to the Giants?

Is Pete Alonso heading to the Bay Area? Well, the San Francisco Giants are turning out to be a potential landing spot for the former Mets slugger. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle mentioned that Alonso is “on the radar” of the Giants. They are looking to add another power hitter after signing shortstop Willy Adames. So, Alonso could be the missing name in the lineup. Jon Heyman reiterated the same, saying that the Giants haven’t signed a ton of players, and they have money left to spend.

Well, the San Francisco Giants haven’t had a player who hit 30 home runs ever since Barry Bonds in 2004. So adding Alonso would give their offense a good kind of pop, which they have been missing for two decades now. Plus, the NL West is a rather fierce division, and recently the Arizona Diamondbacks strengthened their bullpen by adding Corbin Burnes. The LA Dodgers added Blake Snell this season too. So if the Giants need to be competitive, they need a player like Alonso by their side.

Right now, multiple teams have already filled in their first base spot. So, Alonso needs to decide quickly. Scott Boras already has Bregman in a pickle, too, and teams seem to have drawn the line with Bregman as well. So, right now, Pete Alonso might have to reassess and maybe sign for a lower-pay deal.
