Things are taking an unexpected turn in Pete Alonso’s sweepstakes. Alonso first rejected the qualifying offer made by the Mets, and now, at the last minute of this offseason, he wants to get back to the base again. It seems the story is taking a full circle for the Mets, and they are hoping to reap the fruits of their patience. So what is making Alonso consider the Mets as his final destination?

Mets’ owner Steve Cohen’s statement about moving away from Alonso was enough to indicate that the market is not as favorable for Alonso as he hoped for. Unexpectedly, the offer he once rejected would now be the highest bid by a team for him. As per the reports, the Blue Jays are another team to be in contention for Alonso, but Cohen’s tough stance still hasn’t made them desperate to go for him. That’s enough for Alonso to get a reality check and share his willingness to get back to the Mets.

Pete Alonso has all the reasons to be back with the Mets

The credit for Cohen’s tough stance all goes to Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras. It is Alonso who roped in Boras because of getting higher deals this time, but Boras’s hardball approach made things worse, leaving no deals as per his expected level. Since Alonso hit free agency, the Blue Jays have been in contention for him, but they are unlikely to match the Mets’ offer, and given that they have already signed Anthony Santander and are looking to extend the contract for Vladimir Guerrero, the financial scope to take Pete Alonso is low.

The Mets got two offers for Alonso, with one being his qualifying offer of $158 million for six years and $70 million for three years. Hence, Alonso gets both long and short-term deals from the Mets, and anyone will work for him without having any other better deals in hand. “He wants to be back with the New York Mets… he’s a homegrown guy … their problem is the Mets aren’t giving him what he wants,” said MLB insider Ken Rosenthal on Alonso’s desperation towards getting into the Mets. Well, amid the tough stance of Cohen, the Mets have nothing to worry about losing Alonso, and there’s no need to rush for them considering Alonso can re-sign with them even after the camp starts.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Pete Alonso's return to the Mets a sign of loyalty or a lack of better options?

Have an interesting take?

What lies ahead for both?

Since Alonso rejected their offer, the Mets signed Jesse Winker and A.J. Minter. They already got Juan Soto to take charge and look out for Jose Iglesias. This indicates that the Mets could be fielding their team without considering Alonso, but considering they might land him on their previous deal, there’s no reason to not get him back. Someone like Alonso, who smashed 226 HRs in his last six-year stint with the Mets and is going to hit behind Francisco Lindor, Soto, and Brandon Nimmo, makes a strong case for the postseason run of the team.

It’s now all up to the Mets about their acceptance of getting Alonso back. Cohen was visibly frustrated with Alonso’s negotiations, sharing his brutally honest take about moving away from him, but he also mentioned that they kept their door ajar for Pete. It’s just a common midway point away from getting both parties together; however, fans might have to wait a bit longer to see the Mets shaking hands with Pete Alonso considering they are in no hurry to sign him.
