Scott Boras, Pete Alonso, and the New York Mets seem to be in a love-hate triangle none of them want to be in. Both sides seem to be tugging the ropes little by little, but no one wants to give in. Well, that’s the story now. Even though Steve Cohen expressed his frustrations ever so plainly at the Mets fan fest, the reality is their bullpen is a little thin. Insiders are pointing out how if Alonso comes in, with Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, only then they would be in the championship hunt.

Meanwhile, things are not going Alonso’s and Scott Boras’s way. Now Boras at least would want the contract that the Mets had initially offered to Alonso. But even that’s out of the table. Hence, it seems like serious talks and negotiations have taken over Boras and the Toronto Blue Jays. Now it makes sense the Jays want to make the team stellar for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to stay and star. But the ex-MLB GM Jim Bowden sees that as rather far-fetched.

Jim Bowden was at Foul Territory, and he didn’t mince words. For him, the Toronto bid by Scott Boras is just leverage. Now, having worked with Boras quite a few times, Bowden knows how the super agent brains work. Moreover, Bowden mentioned that even though the teams can’t say they are out on a player, according to his understanding, the Blue Jays are not in on it. Nor is Alonso interested in joining them!

“Based on kind of where the Alonzo camp is and where Pete wants to go, it doesn’t seem to be an option,” said Bowden. But then what about the San Francisco Giants? Well, Bowden spilled the beans. He mentioned that Buster Posey is completely opposed to the opt-outs, which everyone knows is what Pete Alonso needs. “He does not want them. That’s a real philosophical, in-cement viewpoint that he has right now in his first year running the Giants, so that’s kind of out.”

Bowden even mentioned that the Seattle Mariners are the best fit for Pete Alonso. But they don’t have the money! So, there aren’t many options. For him, Alonso will lose this negotiation. But he needs to do his best to get the most money upfront and maybe then opt out and then try next time. Much like what Cody Bellinger, another Scott Boras client, did. He landed a great deal this year with the New York Yankees. However, Pete Alonso is not the only player hanging around in free agency still.

Bregman and Pete Alonso mirror each other this free-agency

This time around there aren’t the Boras Five, but Boras Two, who are still in the free agency. Alex Bregman, surprisingly, is still in the free-agent market. And almost like mirroring Pete Alonso, he too might go back to his former team—Houston Astros. The reason? Same, expected more in value, and no one is ready to sign in the rate. Shockingly, like Alonso, even he got offered a $156 million deal by his previous team. But he rejected it!

Is Pete Alonso's saga with the Mets a strategic play, or is he truly out of options?

Talks between the two parties seem to have seized. But just last week, reports on how Houston is interested again. And also how Jose Altuve was ready to move positions to accommodate Bregman came to light. However, apart from that, the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers seem to be the biggest names in the running to sign him. But there is now a new name.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today mentioned that the Toronto Blue Jays gave a six-year offer to Bregman. Now this happened in between the time the Astros turned down their offer, as the contract length didn’t sit well with Bregman. The Red Sox are not into offering anything but a short-term deal. So with teams dropping like flies, if Toronto is the only option, then it’s the best option for Bregman.

A good deal of you might not have seen this happening. But that’s the off-season, ladies and gentlemen—unpredictable by the go. Don’t be surprised to see Bregman in Toronto tomorrow, if that happens. But will you be surprised?
