The Seattle Mariners are not in some sort of rut and have struggled to find their footing this season. While their pitching staff is something that many teams would envy, their offense is a huge red flag. This year, the Seattle Mariners ranked 29th in batting average, were last in total hits, and got struck out more than other teams in the league. For a team with dreams of playoffs, these numbers tell them just one thing—something needs to change.

Things need to change fast, and this off-season is the best and only time to strike for them. Lucky or not, the free market seems to have one star who can solve much of their woes—Pete Alonso. A long-time Mets fan favorite, he has the second-most home runs of any player since his rookie season. Right now, with the New York Mets busy with Juan Soto, there is doubt whether they would sign Alonso. So, if and when he looks for a new home this winter, the Seattle Mariners could be it, as predicted by Andy McCullough of the Athletic.

Pete Alonso fits perfectly with the Seattle Mariners

Pete Alonso moving from the Mets seems heartbreaking, but there is a real chance, according to Andy McCullough, of Alonso going to the Mariners. And it makes sense because the Mariners are struggling to put up the offensive numbers, mostly in the power department, and Alonso’s name keeps coming back as a fix.

“The Mariners are so desperate for offense, especially from the infield corners, that the front office could ignore Alonso’s lack of on-base skills and pay a premium for his power,” mentioned McCullough. And given that Seattle missed the playoffs despite the pitching staff being so strong, it means they can take a swing at Alonso. They may offer him a five-year $150 million deal.

One can argue that Pete Alonso’s year wasn’t fantastic by his standards. And yes, it wasn’t great, but he still managed 34 homers and a solid 123 OPS+. Plus, his clutch performance, including that outstanding home run that kept the New York Mets alive against the Brewers, has only increased his value. Right now, as McCullough mentions, “Alonso is waiting to see where Juan Soto lands.” It all depends on where Juan Soto decides to end up.

Alonso a great fit for the Nationals too!

While the Seattle Mariners may seem like an ideal spot for Alonso, there is also another team that may make a move—the Washington Nationals. Now, they aren’t front runners in the Pete Alonso sweepstakes yet, ESPN’s David Schoenfield sees a great fit, and it does make sense. “They’re an incredibly young team, and after ranking next-to-last in the majors in home runs, the Nats need a power hitter,” justified Schoenfield.

According to David, Alsonso would make a big statement similar to what Jayson Werth’s signing in 2011 made. It provided that veteran presence in a team that’s full of young talent. Moreover, Schoenfield also highlights that Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, has negotiated big deals with the Nationals before, which makes this scene a likely possibility. So, while it might be an out-of-the-blue move, it’s a move that is far from far-fetched. Schoenfield predicts Alonso to land a deal that’s around $180 million over six years. Well, regardless, the fit is there for Washington to add Pete Alonso and push forward.
