Is Pete Alonso the perfect partner for Aaron Judge, or just another overhyped acquisition?

Pete Alonso is about to hit 30 in a month and has been the Mets’ shining star for the past six seasons. Over the years, he has bagged many achievements, including the NL Rookie of the Year title back in 2019 and the All-Star status four times. Not to mention he led the National League with 226 home runs and 586 RBIs during that time frame.

Since his debut with the Mets, Pete has been a cornerstone in their play. But as Alonso steps into the free agency realm, his journey with the team remains uncertain. The Mets are said to have offered him a qualifying deal worth $21.05 million for the coming season that he may decline as he searches for a long-term deal. In the meantime, the New York Yankees have entered Alonso’s bidding war, especially after declining Anthony Rizzo’s option for next season.

Brian Cashman recently mentioned that he had a conversation with agent Scott Boras regarding players Juan Soto and Mets first baseman Pete Alonso at the managers’ meetings. Cashman said, “There’s a lot of high-quality players in this marketplace, and certainly Pete did an amazing job with the Mets,” when asked if Alonso had been part of their discussion, further adding, “Had a brief conversation with Scott about a lot of his; he has a lot of free agents, which is normal, and Pete’s one of them, so yes.” This hints how Alonso might be considered by the Yankees as an option.

Pete Alonso could add a hitting presence to the Yankees roster when paired with Aaron Judge. Together, they might become one of the most impressive home run duos in MLB. Given Alonso’s 46 home runs in 2023 and his track record of performing under the lights of New York City’s stage, the Yankees might see him as an opportunity to strengthen their offensive capabilities. Especially if Soto chooses an agency or faces difficulties in contract extension negotiation.

Another target to follow for the Bronx Bombers

The New York Yankees rotation is an area of concern this offseason following a 2024 season marked by injuries and uneven play on the mound. Reports suggest that the team is targeting some of the big fish in the market, such as Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes. Adding him to the Yankees pitching staff will definitely upgrade their roster by bringing in high-caliber talent to address one of the team’s requirements.

Have an interesting take?

Snell had an exceptional season following winning his second Cy Young Award; his left-handed skills coupled with a knack for strikeouts and playoff success will be a game-changer for the Yankees. While Burnes adds a handed element to the mix as a previous Cy Young recipient known for his precise pitching and ability to pitch for extended periods, his exceptional cutter pitch and impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio are standout qualities that make him an asset on the mound.

By acquiring talent like Snell and Burnes, the Yankees not only aim to address last season’s shortcomings but also position themselves as one of the strongest World Series contenders heading into 2025.
