The 2023 MLB season has unfolded an unexpected narrative. While the big spenders of the league, like the New York Yankees, New York Mets and San Diego Padres, with their high-priced rosters and star-studded lineups, were expected to dominate the competition, it’s the underdogs who have been stealing the spotlight. This scenario begs one to speculate: Is money not everything for finding success? This seems a very legit thought, all thanks to brilliant displays from ‘underdog teams’ throughout the season.
In professional sports, money plays a crucial role, and the teams with high spending on payroll often end up as favorites. The same was the story with The Yankees, Mets, and Padres, who combined have a payroll of almost $900 million. Even after it, teams spending below the league average have outsmarted them. It includes the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays and others. As these teams have created history this season, did the top three spenders make mistakes that led to their downfall?
A Message for the Baseball World That Money Is Not Everything

It has been a season of surprises. Not only for fans but the people involved closely with the game. The reason behind this is the astonishing success of teams like Orioles, Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, and others. Given that these teams have spent less than half of each of the top three spenders in the league, everyone ruled them from making it to the playoffs. But they have proved all wrong by clinching top positions in their divisions.

This case becomes more true for the Orioles, a team with a budget of approx. $71 Million, a few million more than the estimated earnings of Shohei Ohtani this season. They have won 99 games at a winning percentage of 0.627. Surprising, Isn’t it? Well, they are not the only ones. The Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Milwaukee Brewers have succeeded them.
The Rays have qualified from the AL East after Orioles with 97 wins. Given that the division had New York Yankees, no one expected these underdog teams to do well this season. However, the success of these teams serves as a response to those who had initially overlooked them.
This season has been trying, but we're not gonna go without recognizing what we've accomplished. 🍾

However, the story becomes more interesting when the Diamondbacks and Brewers are analyzed on this. After spending around $117 Million in payroll this year, the D-Backs stay strong in the league. They are on the road to making it to the playoffs after five years with a two-game advantage in the wild card spot. With this, the 2001 Champions will join the Brewers for the ultimate battle.

Notably, the Brewers’ success is another statement against the high money spending. They have made it to the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six years with a spending of around $105 million, around 12 million less than that of 2022, and lower than the national average of $165 million. Given the success of these teams after lower spending, it brings the perfect strategy into the picture.
Perfect Strategy Top MLB Teams Failed to Implement
A perfect strategy is the answer to complicated problems. It includes finding success in the MLB, but only a few can perfect it, and this season, the name of the Yankees, Mets, and Padres is not on this list. Rather, the Orioles, Bay Rays, and Brewers have perfected it. They are ripping the benefits of their steps, which they made ahead of the season.
Not going to their division rivals, the Orioles chose to retain their players rather than sign someone on a high budget. It includes the Kyle Gibson, the right-hand pitcher, who has been one strength of their defense and holds the record of 15-9 with over 153 strikeouts to his name. Similarly, instead of spending money on signing a contracted player, they went to DFA’d Aaron Hicks. These moves have proven fruitful, helping the team to make it to the playoffs.
We have agreed to terms with RHP Kyle Gibson on a one-year contract for the 2023 season.

Meanwhile, the Bay Rays took the clue out of the Orioles and extended the contract of Zach Eflin for three years. Their trust in him paid the dividend. Eflin, with 186 strikeouts, has been the star for them. They did the same in the offense by signing Yandy Diaz on a $6 million contract for three more years. It helped them keep the experience at the minimum cost. Supported by other players, both did well and the team succeeded.

The Brewers implemented a similar strategy. They extended the contract of their star MLB player, Corbin Burnes. It allowed them his services for one more season. And why not? He currently has 196 strikeouts to his name with an ERA of 3.46. It helped them maintain their core in offense and defense with the minimum payroll for another successful season.
Surprisingly, the Yankees, Mets, and Padres went for signing players with a higher budget. The move from the Yankees to keep Josh Donaldson and signing Carlos Rodon backfired. Both these players cost them more than half of their rivals spent in the entire season. Moreover, they chose to ignore their top prospects even after the farm system raised many questions.

A similar story was with the Mets, who paid almost $60 million in wages to aged players, raising their budget to an exceptional level. The Padres also lost the bet with expensive signings. It raised their budget but not the performances. Now the season has ended, the question lies, will these teams learn from their mistakes? Though the Padres have shown signs of reducing their payroll, the Yankees and the Mets are linked with heavy spending. It seems, they are unlikely to change to their strategy in the future too.
