The statistics speak for themselves. Across four starts, he’s struck out an impressive 27 batters while he surrendered a mere five hits! His ERA was a sparkling zero. That’s right, zero earned runs in over 12 innings pitched. And above all, he’s averaging over 100 mph on his fastball which is hotter than any starting pitcher currently throwing in the major league.

With numbers like that Skenes clearly has the talent and raw ability to compete at the highest level. And fans that flocked in a line for his autograph is a testament to that. However, the Pirates are taking a careful approach.  Manager Derek Shelton emphasized on the importance of “efficiency,”  preparing Skenes to build stamina and become more calculative with his pitches.

But here’s how the Pirates are trying to strike a balance. While Skenes may not be burning through the big league pitches quite yet, the Pirates are seemingly aiming to stretch him out to complete games. There is an element of strategy at play here. By delaying his debut until later in the season, Pittsburgh can gain an extra year of control over the young star.

In the meantime, baseball fans are chomping at the bit. The videos of autograph lines stretching from the field to the concourse have proved the electric anticipation around the dominance of Skenes. It seems like his entry to the world of MLB could be Stephen Strasburg-esque as mentioned by Yahoo Sports.
