But on the other, they stand in a strange position in this winter’s spending. Could it be that they are on the verge of making a $300 million dollar blitz? 

If this off-season were to be weighed on a scale, the outcome is immensely lopsided. The Los Angeles Dodgers have spent the heaviest. Thanks to Shohei Ohtani’s value and the Brew Crew’s hunger, they lead the scale on one end. On the polar end are the Yankees; is their extreme patience worth it?

@JeffPassan shared the list of “Free agent spending this winter, by team” on Sunday. Of course, leading the pack is the Dodgers, followed by Philadelphia Phillies, $172 million, Arizona Diamondbacks, $122 million and the San Francisco Giants, $113 million. On the far end of the list are the Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins, and Yankees with $0 spent. Does this mean their winter is over? 

Apart from placing the teams in the ascending order of their amounts spent, Passan gave some insights into the overall contract projections that are yet to come. He mentioned, according to @kileymcd’s contract projections, there are approximately $2 billion worth of deals yet to be made. The absence of spending by a team so far doesn’t necessarily indicate a failed off-season; for instance, the Yankees traded for Juan Soto.

Speaking of NYY, they continue to be one of the forerunners in the Yoshinobu Yamamoto chase. Despite the stiff competition from the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and the Giants, the Big Apple still has a chance. After all, they are proceeding with “a sense of ‘cautious optimism’” about the $300M deal.

With that, his second meeting with New York makes sense, doesn’t it?
