Rewind a few months – the offseason had just begun. The New York Yankees were coming off an 82-80 season and GM Brian Cashman was under a lot of fire. With Juan Soto’s trade-in balance, Cashman made a comment that generated a lot of uproar. In a way, he called Giancarlo Stanton injury-prone, and that led to fans questioning his stance. But then, as it stands, maybe the Yankees’ GM’s prediction wasn’t far from reality.

Giancarlo Stanton had spent his entire offseason working on his form and physique. He entered the season in perhaps his leanest physique in the Yankees shirt. All of that was done because Big G wanted to avoid another hamstring injury. But then, as luck would have it, just as things got good, he might be staring at that similar well once more. During the June 22nd game against the Atlanta Braves, the familiar demon showed its face again as Stanton exited the game after feeling tightness in his left hamstring.

Stanton opened the bottom of the fourth with a double. And then he reached home on Gleyber Torres’ double. However, while rounding up the third base, Big G had a visible twitching in his face, he was in pain. Soon enough, he had to leave the game with Trent Grisham pinch-hitting for him. While that was an unfortunate development, it made one remember the words of Brian Cashman.

I’m not gonna tell you, he’s gonna play every game next year because he’s not, Brian Cashman had said in the offseason. He’s going to wind up getting hurt again, more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game. While it generated a lot of hue and cry then, Cashman was not speaking without data. Big G’s legs have troubled him since his Yankees stint began. However, this injury could prove to be hugely detrimental, especially because Stanton was going through a good run.

Injuries taking a toll as Giancarlo Stanton continues to fall

Per the New York Post, in 2023, Stanton missed over 40 games because of a strained left hamstring. Then, in 2022, his left Achilles and right calf troubled him to no end. Similarly, in 2021, Stanton had a strained right calf and a left quad. On top of that, in 2020, he had a left hamstring strain, and in 2019, a sprained right knee. As one can guess, since 2019, Stanton’s legs have slowly fallen off (not literally, obviously) and that isn’t a good sign.

The superstar’s massive contract runs till 2027. With such constant injuries even a trade becomes difficult and that is one of the reasons why the costs of keeping Stanton are increasing for the New York Yankees. But despite that, the team’s coaching staff and squad hope for Giancarlo Stanton to regain his fitness quickly. “He’s such a force for us in the middle of the offense. I hope we get some good news,” New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge had said.

Certainly, with the Bronx Bombers going through a mini-injury issue, losing Stanton isn’t something that they’d like. Especially because the perfect replacement for him, Jasson Dominguez, too, is currently out with an injury.
