Following his MLB debut in 2010, Freddie Freeman finally made the tough decision to leave the Atlanta Braves and return back to the West Coast, in California in 2022. One year after signing a six-year contract worth $162 million with the Dodgers, Freeman has returned to his roots, El Modena High School in California. However, the 2021 World Champion didn’t reach his school without company.
On a rather overcast evening, as was visible by the 33-year-old’s recent Instagram story, the California-raised first baseman reached the ballpark of his high school field with his father, Fred Freeman, and his 87-year-old grandfather.

Moving back to California, after spending the entire first decade of his MLB career in Atlanta, was never an easy decision to make for the first baseman. But the idea of his father and grandfather being able to watch every home game he played was appealing enough, as he described in an interview with USA Today in 2022. Freeman said, “I’ve got my 67-year-old dad and my 86-year-old grandfather, who’s now going to be able to watch me every day. Just like 15 years ago in high school. That’s what’s special to me.”

Concurrently, in a recent story uploaded by the 2020 National League MVP, the three Freeman generations reached Freddie’s high school – El Modena High School and hit the ballpark to train. “3 generations working today,” said Freeman, while captioning an image of his father standing in the box and his grandfather on the field.
He described his 87-year-old grandfather’s performance in the training session by saying, “87 year old grandpa still shagging baseballs for me.” And, while talking about his father’s performance, Freddie Freeman captioned the image, “Papa Free still got it.”
How did Freeman fare in 2022, after he signed with National League rivals?
Despite the entire foundation of his career in Atlanta, Freeman made the tough call and moved to Los Angeles, after a six-year contract worth $162 million. However, neither the Dodgers nor Freeman would be disappointed with his 2022 season.
