What is going on with the Padres? Aside from having a dull offseason, there is serious behind-the-scenes drama going on over who is going to have control over the team. Pete Seidler’s wife Sheel Kamal Seidler has issued a lawsuit against her brother-in-laws Bob and Matt Seidler. So what is her claim?

The brothers failed to do their fiduciary duties as trusted and have also planned to sell the trust’s assets to themselves at prices that are way below market prices.  Sheela claims that Peter Seidler wanted her to be the control person of the team and had expressed his wishes before he died in November 2023. Peter’s brothers on the other hand deny Sheel’s claims and say that their late brother always had a clear estate plan.

The Seidler Trust should sell the Padres as there is no happy ending

On a recent episode of Kaplan and Crew, Scott Kaplan, Alex Padilla, and John Browner discussed the whole Padres situation. Padilla said that the track record of the remaining Seidler brothers that are taking control is like that, referring to the Michael King situation. King had asked for $8.8 million and the Padres are only offering him somewhere around $7 million. Padilla added, “I think the way it’s being spun is like we got to work the mess that Peter made.” Then slowly he added, “Sell the team.”

“Sell the team” John Browner repeated the sentiment that Padilla shared. Scott Kaplan shared the reason people loved Peter Seidler was because of his willingness to all in. “And that’s why people will hate the brothers because instead of the brothers continuing on with what Peter was doing, the brothers are like ‘ we gotta now clean up the mess’” Kaplan added. Their in a lose-lose situation to be honest, cause even if Sheel wins the lawsuit and gains control of the Padres, where is she going to get all that money to do what Peter Seidler was doing? That’s why the podcasters are saying to sell the team or else no one wins.

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Seidler brothers betraying Peter's legacy, or is Sheel's lawsuit just a power grab?

The late Padres owner’s brother replies to the widow’s complaint

The ongoing legal drama surrounding Peter Seidler’s estate and the San Diego Padres is taking some fascinating turns. In a response filed on January 9, Matt Seidler, trustee of the trust controlling the Padres, is pushing back hard against accusations from his late brother’s widow, Sheel Seidler, who claims he and his brother Bob breached their fiduciary duties and acted in bad faith after Peter’s death.

In her lawsuit filed on January 6, Sheel argues that Peter wanted her to have control of the Padres organization, a claim that Matt categorically denies. He’s firing back with allegations that Sheel is motivated by a desire for control—and by the pursuit of “unlimited money.” In a detailed, 25-page response, Matt argues that Sheel’s demands for $20 million in distributions—twice—are excessive, especially given that she’s already received a Texas ranch valued at $30 million and over $4.5 million in cash from the trust since Peter passed away.

Matt’s filing also sheds light on Peter’s intentions, revealing that Peter’s estate was structured to provide for Sheel, but with a clear priority to protect the trust’s remainder beneficiaries—his children. Matt contends that Sheel is simply unhappy that Peter’s plan didn’t give her control over the Padres or a massive stream of income. The drama unfolding here isn’t just about money; it’s about control of a significant sports franchise that has a deep connection to the Seidler family legacy.
