At this point in the offseason, possibilities are wide open, and anything could unfold. With spring training just a month away, agents, teams, and players are getting restless regarding their deals. Chief among them are Scott Boras and his client Blake Snell. Despite winning his second Cy Young award last year, Snell’s market is rather limited. Perhaps that’s why the name of the New York Yankees is now getting linked with Snell. However, why is Scott Boras, a heavyweight in baseball representation, struggling to hit a home run in securing a massive payday for the talented Blake Snell?

Though the Bombers haven’t been seriously linked with Snell till now, a top insider’s recent comments have given the internet a topic to discuss. At the same time, with the Snell sweepstakes losing fire, is Boras failing in a market filled with overpriced pitchers?

While Snell has been linked with the Los Angeles Angels and the San Francisco Giants, the movement in those links is slowing down. With only two teams strongly behind him, having just one more there could set off a bidding war. Maybe that’s what Boras is counting on and according to fans, New York Post’s Jon Heyman is helping him in that regard.

In his most recent article, Heyman said, “The Yankees have been eyeing their former starter Jordan Montgomery most of the winter, and now they are also considering NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell. If they have a choice, there’s no choice. Go for Snell. Go for the gusto.” Fans were quick to pick up this statement as a plea by Heyman to the Yankees to go after Snell.

According to Jon, Montgomery already has enough offers, but the same is not the case with Snell. But here’s the question, why doesn’t Snell have many offers? Is it because of his age or because of his inconsistency that Boras is seemingly failing to ensure a big deal for the SnellZilla?

Most teams, when looking at an ace, expect him to at least pitch 150+ innings. Apart from his two Cy Young winning years, Snell has failed even to touch 130. This could be scaring teams and perhaps that’s why murmurs of a short-term deal are in place.

Boras to accept a short-term deal for his client?

At 31, Snell isn’t a young gun anymore. His durability was never a strong suit, and it will only diminish further with advancing age. At the same time, one good year can’t cover for his four average ones. That’s why many reports are indicating that he could be looking for a three-four-year contract with a strong upfront payment. This would ensure a reduction in risk for his team, as well as an opportunity for Snell to become a free agent again in a few years.

So while the name of the Yankees is being circulated, there’s still little to no evidence that they’re all in on Snell. The bigger story is – what is Boras’ ultimate plan here?
