It’s all going wrong for the New York Mets at the moment. They have had a torrid start to the MLB season after many expected them to be a World Series contender. 2023 has been a difficult year thus far. Most recently, the Mets, not only did they lose a crucial series against a tough opponent, but their star infielder Pete Alonso also made a base-running blunder.
The Buck Showalter-led team picked up a dominant win in the series opener against the Houston Astros. But the reigning World Series champs made a comeback and won games 2 and 3 to clinch the series. And while they lost the series, it is Alonso who has been on the radar for his mistake.

The Mets were in a good position to score runs early in their clash with the Houston Astros. With the bases loaded and no outs, Polar Bear had a great chance to send some runners home. Alonso got contact with the ball and put it in play, but the runner on third was out at the home plate. Then the ball was thrown to first in an attempt to get him out, but an error occurred. As the Mets’ infielder was on his way to second base, he was called out for running off of the baseline. This shut down the New York-based team’s chance of an early lead in the first inning. SNY shared a video of the incident on Twitter.

Like, can we just stop getting in our own way please!?! The Mets are certainly making it harder on themselves to win games when they keep making these mistakes on a nightly basis. https://t.co/vH3C6esGmt
