While their relationship quickly became the talk of the town, it involved multiple moments that were rather wholesome and heartwarming. Not something that one would ideally associate the rough and aggressive on-field Derek Jeter with. Nevertheless, one of these moments involved Captain Clutch’s pre-game rituals that surrounded Mariah Carey and a song written by her.
How was Mariah Carey part of Derek Jeter’s pre-match ritual?
Mariah Carey, in her memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” talks about Derek Jeter’s under-the-radar pre-match ritual. Carey talks about the first time she met Jeter, and him making a shocking revelation.
She says, “That night he and I met, he told me ‘Anytime You Need a Friend’ was his favorite song and that he listened to it before every game.” Carey continued to talk about her own derivation of an “especially significant.” She says, “Among all of my songs, that one was especially significant, because I was desperately alone, removed from friends and full of fear.” Carey adds, “I wrote that song thinking about what I thought God would say to us in times of fear.”
Finally, she talks about having faith in her fans, and how Jeter listening to that song translated into her having faith in him. Mariah added, “It also let me know he was actually a fan. And the fans were the only people I really trusted.”
Derek Jeter and Mariah Carey: “The Roof (Back in Time)”
Notably, the shortstop and the singer started dating in 1997. And while their relationship only lasted a year, it stretched from writing songs for the other person to listening to songs before games. The massively successful Grammy winner wrote a song about her relationship with Derek Jeter.
The song was “The Roof (Back in Time).” Analogous to its name, the song was about the couple’s first kiss that took place on Jeter’s apartment roof.
