The NY Mets surprised the MLB community with their recent moves. Well, it’s not related to their player transactions but to their starting rotation. Their projected starting rotation included Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Griffin Canning, and Tylor Megill, but the veteran Clay Holmes just got included out of nowhere. Yes, the 31-year-old pitcher will start for the first time since 2018. While it’s entirely surprising, this move recognizes Holmes’ impressive spring season.

Furthermore, injuries to Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas made a stronger case for Holmes. However, will Holmes prove to be effective enough for the team?

A lot is riding on Holmes this year. His performance with the Yankees last season was nothing short of outstanding. He had a 3.14 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 68 strikeouts at the end of the season. For the NY Mets, Kodai Senga and David Peterson are more likely to be available on opening day.

However, Holmes’ impressive spring gives the team an option to take a shot at. With 14 innings pitched, 15 strikeouts, five walks, and a 0.71 WHIP, the right-hander has only given up two earned runs (1.25 ERA) in his four spring training starts thus far.

It’s fun, it’s exciting. At the start of the season, crowds are usually everywhere and sold out. And I mean, that’s what it’s about. It’s one of those days, you know, it’s a lot of fun,” Megill said when asked about his advice for Holmes. Yes, for starters, they need to hold their nerve experiencing the sold-out crowds chanting all around. Holmes is going to face it for the first time since 2018.

Well, Holmes’ inclusion in the starting rotation has excited his teammates. The Mets’ pitcher Tylor Megill was candid about Holmes in the post-match press meet after their game against the Astros.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Clay Holmes' unexpected start be the game-changer the Mets need for a championship run?

So happy to go out there and watch him throw and, you know, get us going on the good foot,” Megill added. While Holmes was a relief pitcher, his experience was something to tap into. A sound and fit Clay Holmes is all that the NY Mets need for their breakthrough this year.

2025 is going to be the breakthrough year for the Mets

Owing to their deep pockets and aggressive offseason, the Mets have a solid roster, including experienced stars and young talent. The Mets will boast one of the strongest lineups in MLB this year, only if their top players remain healthy. A key contribution is anticipated from the Mets’ core group of seasoned players, which includes Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso.

With players like Alonso, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos at the plates, and Soto and Lindor hitting behind them, a miracle is needed to stop the scoreboard of the Mets.

However, the injury of veteran Brandon Nimmo can make things challenging for the Mets. The outfield might be left dry in the absence of Nimmo. Recently, the outfielder experienced some stiffness in his right knee, and he had to postpone starting camp while completing his recuperation from the plantar fasciitis that affected him in 2024.

However, this Thursday, Nimmo is back as a designated hitter. With a $320 million payroll this year, the Mets got the best chance to get a ring this year. Soto’s experience could provide the elite mentality the Mets need for a championship run.

The Mets are well jacked up this year, and watching Holmes as a starter after all these years will hopefully be a treat to watch. However, their preparedness depends on overcoming injuries and adding depth, especially in the bullpen.
