Put an introvert in the limelight and one might see the most interestingly awkward and hilarious situations. The center of attention, the pressure to do everything correctly, shaking hands – who wouldn’t be intimidated? Derek Jeter, apparently! Some people do know how to handle themselves under the spotlight, and Jeter shone brightly. And yet, that isn’t to say there haven’t been embarrassing moments.

The former Yankee left everyone in the dust when it came to his shortstop duties. His impressive list of titles and unforgettable name are the only proof one needs. As if that wasn’t enough, a young Jeter and his cool and reserved attitude, plus his unique sense of fashion, endeared him to fans even more. But does Captain Clutch have regrets about his past embarrassing moments now?

There are rarely any people in the world who are not self-conscious of the way they look, or used to look. Old photos are sometimes mortifying to look at, especially when taken as adults. The 48-year-old ex-athlete feels the same, who recently got inducted into the GQ Sports Style Hall of Fame. Talking to GQ correspondent Brett Martin, Jeter indulged in some personal stories of his infamous shag haircut and his baggy suits.

“I wore some baggy suits, you know what I mean? But that was the style back then. You look at it now, and it’s somewhat embarrassing. I don’t know if I necessarily regret anything, but I do get embarrassed by old pictures,” the retired athlete laughingly told Martin.

More than the changing times, Jeter had his wife to credit for his fashion choices

Supermodel Hannah Davis and Derek Jeter met in 2012 when the former shortstop was nearing an end in his baseball career. The couple got married in 2016 and Davis is apparently to credit for Jeter’s somewhat drastic change of style. Those baggy suits may have been comfortable, and even considered a fashion statement in the late 1990s or early 2000s. But these days it’s all about tailored fits.

Left to his own devices, Captain Clutch may have hung on to those comfortable clothes, but in another GQ interview, Jeter spilled the truth. Which was that his wife was the one who actually got him to care more about his style and give up the baggy suits. The former Yankee sure found a great match in Davis!
