And the New York Mets are back in the news again. Their presence in this season’s market has had many eyes on them. They did make some huge deals to bolster their squad. They made signings like Juan Soto, Sean Manaea, and Griffin Canning. But the Pete Alonso- New York Mets saga seems to be never-ending. They have been at the table since the middle of 2024 and still have not reached a deal. But according to a radio host, the team might not be able to work without him.

Jim Duquette, a famous journalist in the MLB world, has given his view on this whole negotiation and why it is important for the Mets to sign Pete Alonso or try to get someone like him. This is what Duquette said on the show, “I keep saying this though, from the Mets side, they still need Pete or somebody like him. To protect the investment that they have in Soto in particular, and Lindor and the rest of that lineup. The one thing the Mets are, I don’t think they’re underestimating or maybe they’re over…over evaluating Mark Vientos’ ability to protect Soto.”

By this reaction, Duquette has made it very clear that to protect players like Juan Soto, Fransisco Lindor, and others, they will need a backup. And Pete Alonso was going to be that man. But with this whole drama that is happening, the Mets are relying on Mark Vientos for this job. And Duquette thinks that it might be too much to ask from him. So they will either need Pete Alonso or someone similar to him to help them through this.

Duquette also pointed out, “It’s a whole different ball game in your second full season. It’s a league that started to catch up with you a little bit. And you’re hitting right behind Juan Soto. Every single time, when the game’s on the line, they’re going to pitch around or likely pitch around Soto and go to you, to Vientos.” Saying that once you start to bat behind Soto. Mark Vientos will feel the pressure. Not just because he is batting behind Soto, but most likely the pitchers in important situations will walk Soto and will want to pitch to Mark Vientos. So, all the pressure in the world will be on him and it might be too much for him in his second full season.

But that said it is looking very difficult for the New York Mets and Pete Alonso to reach a deal. But never say never. The New York Mets will still need a player like Pete Alonso at least to support the lineup and protect some players.

Will the Mets’ roster overhaul propel them to success or set them up for setbacks?

Significant roster changes are expected to take place within the New York Mets organization as they gear up for the 2025 MLB season. They intend to bolster their competitiveness through such a transformation. The centerpiece of this overhaul is a superstar outfielder Juan Soto, signed with an all-time 15-year, $765 million contract. His impressive hitting skills are hoped to propel the Mets’ offense upwards.

Pete Alonso is good. Very good. However, he is not great and certainly not irreplaceable. He is arrogant and self...more

Along with Soto, the Mets made savvy decisions to round out their rotation in pitching. Former closer with the Yankees, Clay Holmes inked a three-year, $38 million contract as a much-needed addition toward deepening a much-changed starting rotation, an idea manager Carlos Mendoza had nothing but enthusiasm about because Holmes demonstrated to him an enthusiasm to develop himself from a potential closing type of pitcher to something he hasn’t yet explored but certainly will with time.

However, the immediate future of Alonso, the first baseman, is uncertain, as owner Steve Cohen has already termed negotiations to retain him as “exhausting.” This was a hint towards potential difficulties. Alonso’s loss is going to severely hurt the line-up of the team, and perhaps, the organization will look toward other alternatives too.

Despite these challenges, the new changes in the Mets’ roster have been positively affecting their World Series odds. After signing Soto, the sports books changed the Mets’ odds to +750 with higher confidence in the team’s chance of winning the championship. This change highlights the impact of the overhauled roster on the Mets’ performance during the season ahead.
