It was supposed to be a moment of celebration. The Puerto Rican team had just defeated the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Two strong teams got a match-up, but then there was an unexpected winner in Puerto Rico. As the team celebrated their win, Edwin Diaz fell to the ground in pain. Shouts of cheer turned into horror as the Mets pitcher was carried off the field in a wheelchair.

Diaz’s teammates looked on with concern on their faces, while his brother, Alexis, had tears in his eyes. The younger Diaz is also an MLB player and had joined his brother for the WBC. As for Diaz senior, it was reported that Edwin has a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, an injury that has been treated as career-ending in the past. The 28-year-old will miss most of the season before it’s even begun. But he gave a positive update recently.

Diaz tweeted some positive news after Puerto Rico’s victory turned sour. He said, “To all my beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am doing well and healing. I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much! I can’t wait to see you guys in NY again and play those trumpets.”

How will Diaz’s absence affect the Mets in the 2023 season?

Simply said, the Mets are prepared to deal with this devastating update. Unexpected player injuries happen all the time, be it off-season or during the regular season. But it’s a crushing defeat for Mets fans as well as Diaz, who is a cheerful presence in the clubhouse and loved by all.

There’s an eight-month estimate before Diaz can make it back to the clubhouse and it’s bad timing all around. Why? Because eight months from now is October. And yet, as one of the best closers the game has seen, Diaz is hopeful and so are the fans. The Mets will have a replacement in David Robertson, who may not be as good as Diaz, but is still a worthy stand-in.
