Nothing beats the Shohei Ohtani free agency drama. While the suspenseful period of free agency is underway, there have been conflicting reports that have stirred up the media. The recent tweet by MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi about the two-way phenom’s presence in Toronto started speculations about his association with the team. But there was a twist to the tale.

A couple of more reports stating otherwise followed Morosi’s tweet. As the back and forth went on about where Ohtani was or is, it is hard not to notice the depth and width of chatter surrounding this subject. The air-castles that the Toronto MLB fans built barely lasted an hour and 10 minutes before it came crashing on the ground.

So here’s what happened. After @jonmorosi tweeted “Shohei Ohtani is en route to Toronto today”, there began quite a noticeable hullabaloo. However, the bubble was soon to burst when sources including @JimBowdenGM and @BNightengale mentioned that Ohtani was, in fact, NOT in Toronto.

The 28-year-old Japanese was believed to be traveling to Toronto Pearson International Airport this afternoon on a private jet, which made it the most tracked flight globally. It turned out that Ohtani was not on board this plane, despite reports to the contrary. But that was, after all, the city had been discussing his potential arrival soon. This was not the only claim that created a buzz on social media.

The claim that the unicorn had a reservation for dinner at a classy sushi restaurant in Toronto went viral on social media as well. That too was untrue, though. The somewhat slow off-season this year has got to be the most clandestine one yet. Despite the rumors, it’s not impossible for the Blue Jays to acquire the Oshu-born player.

The Secrecy of Ohtani’s Signing

The Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Angels, and the San Francisco Giants are the other four teams that have been named finalists apart from the Blue Jays. “In the last several days, the Jays have certainly improved their standing [on Shohei Ohtani]” said a report by MLB Network. Well, the world is still a long way from the eventual results.
