“Not a Great Singer, But..” – Derek Jeter’s Roommate Once Revealed How the Yankees Star Obsessed Over Mariah Carey During His High School Days

Like many teenagers, shortstop Derek Jeter used to have crushes too, that he once dreamed of dating. But for Jeter, it was different. With the person that he had a teen crush on, he actually got to date years later. Singer and actress Mariah Carey is the person Jeter had dreamed of being with and actually did it. 

When it comes to dating, shortstop Derek Jeter has a pretty long list. Most of them are still rumors to this day because neither party has ever spoken officially about it. People would have never gotten to know about Jeter’s crush on Carey had his locker-mate Chris Heaps spill some tea about the teenager Jeter and his hopes of getting married one day. 

What has Chris Heaps said about Derek Jeter?

Jeter’s crush on Carey as a teen is not hidden from anyone. Over the years, it was also revealed that the shortstop had her pictures in his room as well. But Heaps had a little something to add to it.

In his locker, Jeter used to have “a picture or two, and a motivational thing or two, and some family stuff,” said Heaps. 

He further added, “And I remember a picture of Mariah Carey, and him singing, ‘I’ll Be There,’ with his headphones on. Not a great singer, but we laughed and liked it.”

Jeter’s crush on Carey was so strong that he used to say, “One day, I’m going to marry her,” while holding her picture.

He may not have gotten to marry his teenage crush. But he did get to date her for almost a year. Considering Jeter’s history of relationships, being together even for one year was pretty big. 

Why did Carey and Jeter break up?

The former couple broke up after dating for around a year in the late 1990s. After breaking up with Jeter, Carey has said that Jeter was the catalyst that she needed to get a divorce from her ex-husband Tommy Mottola.

She has also said that Jeter was one love in her life, but not the love of her life. But unfortunately, things didn’t work out between the former couple and they broke up in 1998. Jeter went on to date quite a few women before he settled down with his wife, Hannah Jeter, in 2016.
