Umpire Larry Vanover, working second base as the New York Yankees, took on the Cleveland Guardians in the series decider at Progressive Field, landed in the hospital in the middle of the game after a fast relay throw hit his head.
During the game, 67-year-old Vanover, who was stationed at second base, was knocked to the ground on the infield grass. This happened when Guardians All-Star second baseman Andres Gimenez threw the ball toward the plate and unintentionally hit Vanover on the left side of his head. Vanover was located between the second base and the pitcher’s mound at the time.

To everyone’s good luck, Larry Vanover could power off the field without any support. But he was instantly hospitalized and checked for a concussion as a very simple play turned into a potentially life-threatening injury for the umpire.

Eventually, the New York Yankees beat the Guardians 4-3 and won the series on the road. Plate umpire Chris Guccione provided an update on Vanover’s injury after the game, and said, “They’re going to do a concussion test and it sounded like he was coherent and that he knew kind of what was going on. But he did have that glazed look on him. He’s going to be at the hospital for the rest of the night maybe.”
In the first inning of the game itself, Aaron Boone was ejected after arguing with the umpires.
Following the game, Boone spoke about Larry Vanover getting hit: “That looked pretty scary. He got smoked pretty well. I was obviously pretty animated and pretty emotional and I thought he did an outstanding job of not meeting my anger and kind of understanding and being real under control and certainly respectful and I appreciate that and I hope he’s well.”
Brutal fans display no sympathy for Larry Vanover despite his fatal injury
Today, fans have become very critical of umpires due to the consistently increasing number of poor calls changing the course of the game. Even after the palpably fatal hit on the head, fans failed to show any sympathy toward Vanover.
This is how fans reacted:
I wish I felt bad, but umpires these days have got me so ticked with their rigging that I lost interest in their well being
