New York Yankees are in stark need of a new management. The Hal Steinbrenner-owned team has long maintained its status quo, unwilling to shake things up. While Brian Cashman has had a steady win record of more than 25 years, fans are reluctant to give him too much credit. In his place, they would rather see new management in the form of a former player.

Interestingly, for many, that individual is not Derek Jeter. When the ex-Yankees captain announced at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony that fans would hopefully see more of him, rumors started swirling about his next role in the clubhouse. Many wanted him to replace Cashman, but unfortunately, a year later, it has not come to pass. However, with the recent success of a college football team managed by Deion Sanders, the Bronx wants Coach Prime.

After three years at Jackson State coaching his son, retired NFL player Deion Sanders is in his first season as football coach for the Colorado Buffaloes. Sanders is known for his unique athletic abilities that allowed him to shine in two major sports leagues. At the same time. In addition to playing defensive back in the NFL, ‘Prime Time’ also served as an outfielder for various MLB teams.

His athletic prowess was well recognized and now that he’s retired, he’s taken to coaching. Colorado Buffalo fans rallied to donate a record $28 million when Colorado Boulder signed Sanders to a $29.5 million deal. In his very first season, the retired footballer led his team to a victory against last season’s national title runner-up, TCU. With it, he has cemented his reputation as a coach who knows how to be successful. Now, the Bronx fans want him in New York.

While the Yankees have made changes in their coaching department, the front office could do with new management as well. So instead of coaching the team, the Bombers fans want Coach Prime as a GM to replace Brian Cashman and his questionable decision-making. No more Jeter, but more of Sanders.

Although the infamous football coach has never worked in baseball beyond a player capacity, could he improve things in this new role? Many think it cannot certainly get any worse than what the situation already is. But would Sanders do better than Derek Jeter, a previous Yankee?

Jeter vs. Sanders: Who Would Be Better for New York?

A role in the front office vs. a player is fundamentally different on many levels, and no matter who occupies the position, it will always be a risk. Jeter has some points in his favor – he is familiar with how the Yankees function and Hal Steinbrenner is averse to going out of his way to find a new GM. But a big if is that Cashman’s role is firmly secure for the foreseeable future.

Sanders has never worked in baseball management, but he can boast a winning record as a coach in another sport. For Jeter, it would be a step down from his previous role as the Miami Marlins’ CEO, and yet, he would be with the Yankees again.

It will be a toss-up to see who performs better, but that is if the Steinbrenners decide to employ either of these names at all.
