Imagine New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter moving to play shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays… unbelievable, right? That’s exactly how every New England Patriots fan felt when Tom Brady made the infamous decision and moved to the Buccaneers after entering his free agency in 2020. But what motivated Brady to move to Tampa?
If reports are true, then a dinner with Jeter and renowned billionaire, who is apparently a nemesis of Twitter CEO Elon Musk, was the deciding factor for Brady. Notably, after New England Patriots topped AFC East in 2019, they lost to the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round. As a result, the Patriots exited the playoffs.

An influential dinner convinced Tom Brady to make a massive move
While making a bold comparison to the Curse of the Bambino, Brady’s trade to Florida has directly allowed the birth of a brand new NFL rivalry – the Bucs vs the Patriots. This mammoth decision reportedly stemmed from the quarterback’s dinner with New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter, $100 billion man Bill Gates and the owner of NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, Jeff Vinik.

As reported by Sports Naut in a piece from March 2020, it was this dinner that convinced Brady to make the gigantic decision of moving to Tampa, after getting the “lay of the land” from Jeter, Gates, and Vinik.
As a result, the 7-time Super Bowl champ signed a whopping two-year deal with the Bucs, worth $50 million. In addition to that, the contract also included a no-trade and a no-franchise tag clause.
After signing the $50 million contract, Brady moved to the royal Jeter mansion in Tampa
In 2020, when $250 million worth Tom Brady switched bases to Tampa, the quarterback rented out Jeter’s luxurious mansion in Davis Islands, Tampa Bay, Florida.
The 1.2 acres plot, locally dubbed St. Jetersburg, spanned across seven bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, an air-conditioned garage, a movie theater, a wine cellar, a heated spa, and a gym, amongst many other luxuries.

However, introverted Tom Brady wasn’t the most comfortable with the attention Jeter’s mansion attracted. Eventually, as the house was in violation of the local flood elevation guidelines, Derek Jeter sold the house. And a new property, four to six higher than what Jeter built, will be constructed.
