Vladimir Guerrero Jr. almost had his moment of glory stolen away. After one of the most electric Home Run Derby performances, the Toronto Blue Jays star has made history. Guerrero Jr. and Guerrero Sr. are the only father-son duo ever to win the championship. And to think the first baseman almost lost the winner’s memorabilia.
After one of the best displays in 2019, fans were itching to see a repeat performance. To say that some were disappointed to see Pete Alonso take home the win back then would be an understatement. This time, the Blue Jays star defeated some of the biggest names in the league to be crowned champion. But before that, an NFL legend wanted to boast about the trophy.

After defeating Seattle’s favorite Julio Rodriguez in the semifinals, who incidentally set a single-round HR record, Guerrero Jr. dispatched the Tampa Bay Rays’ Randy Arozarena to win the final, 25-23. But when it came to awarding him the Derby trophy, it was missing. All eyes turned to another Seattle favorite, former Seahawks star Marshawn Lynch.
In a video shared by MLB Life, the retired footballer can be seen parading the award around the audience, almost as if he was the one who had won it. The Derby gold chain is around Lynch’s neck as he walks around the stadium.

Strangely, no. The 2023 regular season could have been better for Guerrero’s career, with only three home runs recorded at Rogers Center. But the Toronto star was confident in participating in the HRDerby this year. As it turned out, it was for good reason. But when asked if his dad gave him any tips, he told MLB.com with a smile, “Zero advice. ‘Hit homers.'” And Jr. took it to heart!
