New York Yankees Youngster Anthony Volpe Faces Major Dilemma Ahead of Opening Day Despite #77 Attachment

Anthony Volpe’s dream of stepping out onto the Yankee Stadium has been with him for a long time. One might imagine that his love for the New York Yankees began when he saw Derek Jeter’s display of excellence in the emerald greens of the ballpark. But, no, his love for baseball had been instilled in his blood even before he was born. Volpe’s family goes back as far as his great-grandfather to celebrate the sport, who used to spend the little free time that he had, playing catch and watching the Pinstripes games on a black and white television with his kid.

Now that the 21-year-old has won the New York Yankees shortstop position over Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Oswald Peraza, all that’s left to do is to decide on his jersey number. He doesn’t have long, however, as Opening Day 23 is right around the corner. 

The young sensation is considering number 77 as his Yankee number

Jersey numbers hold a particular significance for the players who don them. Anthony Volpe’s idol Derek Jeter number 2 is legendary in its own right. Captain Clutch’s number was retired to honor the Hall of Famer and now hangs in the monument park in all its glory. 

Now that the rookie is filling in the former captain’s shoes, his number could be as special as Jeter’s. And the pressure now falls on Volpe, who has to decide which number he wants the baseball world to know him for. According to Bryan Hoch, an insider reporter of the Yankees, the shortstop doesn’t know which number he’ll wear for the rest of his career yet. Although, the young sensation is contemplating number 77, as it was his grandfather’s favorite Yankees number – Mickey Mantle.

The dilemma is as old as time. While some players don’t think too much about what numbers they are going to wear and just pick the ones that are available, for others, it’s a matter that requires much deliberation. It remains to be seen which number Volpe decides to wear.
