In what was a highly controversial deal at the time, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees. The Red Sox got a little more than $100,000 in the deal and the Yankees got Ruth. A Twitter handle called Baseball in Pics shared a newspaper snippet of the deal and said, “The Yankees buy Babe Ruth from the Red Sox December 26, 1919.”

Ruth and the Yankees would go on to win 4 World Series titles in the time that he was with the team. Whereas the Red Sox would not win another World Series for 86 years.

But fans are not wrong in calling it the worst exchange in history. Moreover, it was caused by poor financial management and a need for funds.

Why did the Boston Red Sox sell Ruth?

The reason is simple: Harry Frazee, the owner of the Red Sox at the time needed money. Furthermore, the Yankees ownership had offered Frazee a deal he couldn’t refuse. The Yankees got their star and Frazee got the money he needed. In hindsight, most people consider this one of the most historic deals in MLB history.
