“I’m having a lot of fun with it,” Austin Wells said after his ridiculous game. Though the New York Yankees rookie was talking about his position behind Aaron Judge in the lineup, one could guess there were other meanings to this statement. Before the game started, Wells had already become a viral sensation due to his funny TikTok video. Just how big of a sensation was he? Let’s just say, it was big enough that he was forced to make a big change.
When Wells walked in to bat, the Yankee Stadium heard a different tune. This wasn’t the usual walk-up song of the catching rookie but it did sound familiar. Turns out, the 25-year-old had swapped his old walk-up song with the one that got him viral. In his viral TikTok video posted a few years ago, Wells was seen dancing furiously while walking by his car. His moves became so viral that even Juan Soto mimicked them after one of Wells’ home runs.
Yes, the 25-year-old Austin Wells had his career’s first multi-home run game. The Yankees rookie hit two massive home runs to seal the Bronx Bombers’ 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The first one came during the 3rd inning against Eric Fedde and the second came in the 8th inning. Both were two-run hits that helped the Yankees maintain their impeccable home record against the Cardinals. Quite a way to add up to the viral clip, right?

“Those were two big at-bats,” Aaron Boone said per New York Post, adding, “He continues to be a real presence in the middle of our order.” The Yankees skipper noted how the rookie was beginning to show maturity during his plate appearances. “I think you’re seeing the experience and maturity of a good hitter. That’s who we drafted,” Boone said. But while the skipper was happy with Wells’ growth, his teammates were more interested in his “Shooting Stars” walk-up song.
How Austin Wells decided to change his walk-up song
The 25-year-old New York Yankees star noted that he always wanted to change his walkup song. However, he couldn’t decide what he should change it to. That’s when Anthony Volpe came to his help. “All the guys had a pretty good kick out of it. So it was pretty funny. And I wanted to change my walk-up song anyways,” Wells revealed. “Then Volpe was like, ‘Dude you gotta do the song. You have to do the song!’ And I was like, ‘Alright, I’ll do it.’” Well, it certainly worked out quite well for Wells.

But then, maybe it worked out a little too well. To have your first two-home run game during the first day of a new song? Surely, that song needs to stay for some time. Even Juan Soto couldn’t help but vibe to Wells’ video. “It was great!” Soto said. “He made a great TikTok video. It was funny, it gets everybody going, it gets the vibes. I mean, what else we can ask for?” Surely, the Yankees have found another thing to bond over this season.
So, with Austin Wells cementing his place in the New York Yankees clubhouse, one wonders if more such games will follow. The rookie catcher is going through a ridiculous purple patch and that is a scary situation for all the opposition teams. What do you think about his video? Let us know in the comments below.
