Jazz Chisholm Jr. making history already—Is he the spark the Yankees needed this season?

Having a clear intention to revive their sluggish lineup, the Yankees were desperate to land the right prospect. Just a few days away from the July 30 MLB trade deadline, the Bronx Bombers finally acquired the Miami Marlins’ versatile outfielder, Jazz Chisholm Jr., who proved his worth from his first play for the Yanks. On Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chisholm smacked two homers, making the New York Yankees win 14-4 at Citizens Bank Park.

Unarguably, before the Phillies match, the Yankees were dreading a horrendous stretch. They had a record of 51-22, which was among the worst records in major league baseball history. Also, with a batting lineup heavily dependent on Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, Chisholm Jr. added that X-factor to an already potent offensive roster. Nevertheless, apart from scoring two homers in his first MLB game, the 26-year-old aspiring MLB star made a historic record for the first time in MLB history.

Last Saturday, the Yankees got Jazz from trading three prospects: Agustin Ramirez, infielders Abrahan Ramirez, and Jared Serna. Already making his presence felt in his first game for the Yankees, Chisholm smashed another pair of home runs on Tuesday night. His second blast gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead at the start of the seventh inning. Eventually, with the next two homers, he became the only hitter in Bronx Bombers history to smash four home runs in the first three games for the Yankees.

Against the Phillies, when the rookie Will Warren tool the Mound, New York Yankees struggled with an early 4-1 score. Thereafter, the team went for 5-4 with a walk from Juan Soto and Yankees captain Aaron Judge. However, despite scoring a few runs, the Pinstripes needed a homer. Then came Chisholm Jr in the 12th innings, who smacked a 362-foot homer into the right field. Further, showing no signs of slowing down, he again smashed his second hammer of a solo 417 feet in the sixth inning, making the Yankees win 7-6 against their arch-rivals.

Chisholm played for six years with the Marlins but had never hit multiple home runs in back-to-back games. Also, the aspiring Yankees outfielder has not struck three home runs throughout two games. Moreover, Chisholm has 14 home runs in the 2024 season. Having a career-high of 20, the swinger could surpass the 20 homers number based on his current form. With Chisholm playing for the Yankees, he showed no hesitation in grabbing the new role.

Chisholm Jr seems to be a perfect rotational player for the Yankees

Undoubtedly, Jazz playing at a new position he has never played before shows his versatility as an MLB prospect. For the Miami Marlins, he had the experience to play in the infield and the outfield but only at second base and center field. Further, exploring the 2B position in the New York Yankees, it is occupied by Gleyber Torres.

Well, the decision goes back to Aaron Boone, who was firm on Torres to play at the second base. However, when deciding on a new position for Jazz, Boone said, “I want him to start working here. It’s not something he’s played, obviously, came up as a shortstop.” Reflecting on the Yankees manager’s statement, Boone might want Chisholm to play at the third base position. This will allow Aaron Judge to move into the right field and Soto toward the left end. Also, from a different perspective, Gleyber Torres might become a free against after the 2024 season. For Chisholm, the date is two years away in 2026, when he will hit the free agency.

Hence, if Gleyber hunts for a new club after the 2024 season, Boone might let Chisholm play at his natural 2B position. Albeit analyzing a sample size of just three games, Chisholm Jr. has handled the 3B position pretty well. Ultimately, with the Yankees surpassing the Phillies, the big assignment against the Toronto Blue Jays will decide their 2024 MLB playoff future. Lastly, for Chisholm Jr., his four homers in three games might have given him confidence as he awaits homecoming at the Yankees stadium for the decisive three-game series.

With the addition of Jazz Chisholm Jr, will the Yankees make it to the 2024 Playoffs? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
