Hello, is it 2023? Remember when Cody Bellinger was being perennially linked with the New York Yankees? First as a possible trade and then as a free agent? Well, while a union wasn’t possible then, it looks like the links have emerged once again. The Chicago Cubs are struggling and the Yankees have a huge hole in their infield. But while a match looks great, there’s another link that the Bronx Bombers currently have with a Miami Marlins pitcher.

Though technically the Yankees can trade for both Bellinger and Tanner Scott, they currently have a slight limitation. With the team giving away most of its top prospects for Juan Soto, they might not have the necessary flexibility to trade for both. And that is a huge dilemma for Brian Cashman. After all, the Yankees aren’t in the best of form and changes need to be made.

According to The Athletic, the Cubs might make Bellinger available for trade. Their highly disappointing season (currently last in NL Central) could lead to them cutting off the $80 million deal prematurely. The Yankees are said to be highly interested in getting their hands on the former MVP, especially because he can play in first base, where the Yankees currently lack consistency.

On top of that, despite having a significant offensive downturn this season, Bellinger’s numbers still remain quite solid. With a slash of .273/.333/.432 and 9 homers, he has been reasonably productive in a Cubs squad that just can’t score runs.

Certainly, he’d be a great addition to their hitting staff but that’s exactly where the dilemma comes. On one hand, he has even stronger links with the Seattle Mariners, and on the other, Pinstripes’ current situation makes things difficult.

Yes, the Yankees need to improve their infield, their pitching has collapsed too. That makes it obvious why there are strong links with Tanner Scott, who too needs a change of scenery.

Amidst Cody Bellinger links, Yankees also have a pitching need

The 29-year-old Marlins pitcher is generating tons of interest from all over the league. Though his numbers look great (1.50 ERA), with an expected ERA of 3.40, luck too has greatly benefited him. However, due to the limited supply of relievers right now in the market, Tanner Scott could command a nice price.

Per The Athletic, the New York Yankees will have to compete with the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Dodgers for Scott. That suggests that things won’t be simple or cheap in this situation. With the Bronx Bombers’ bullpen collapsing in June, there’s a desperate need for them to add someone to their staff. And in this limited market, Tanner Scott looks like the perfect candidate.

Certainly, Brian Cashman now has his work cut out for him. Strong links have emerged with both Cody Bellinger and Scott. But now it’s up to Cashman to find a way to bring success back to Yankee Stadium.
