All eyes are looking forward to the New York Yankees’ 2024 season. While Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton return to form, the Yankees’ 2024 postseason aspirations soar. But they are not the only ones with star power. This is a team job. That said, who will embrace crucial roles in the Bronx?
A select group of role players are expected to step up if the team desires to climb back to the top of the AL East and beyond. While names like Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes are back in the lineup, there are more whom the Yankees faithful can bank on.

The 2023 season’s marquee signing, Rodón, faltered under the starry lights of the Big Apple. Injuries robbed him of valuable time, and when healthy, he could not perform to his best abilities. A 6.85 ERA and a 3-8 record paint a bleak picture. However, beneath the injury-stained optics lies a pitcher with immense potential. If the 31-year-old recoups his pre-Yankees form, his dominating fastball and curveball could establish him as the second or third ace. After all, the rotation desperately needs him.

Speaking of rotation needs, Nestor Cortes’ meteoric rise in 2022 was a major factor in the Yankees’ successful rotation. Unfortunately, injuries had him sidelined in 2023, leaving a glaring gap in the rotation. While his comeback is crucial, it’s not enough unless he replicates his 2022 magic. If Cortes can regain his pinpoint control and baffling changeup, his ability to go deep into games will serve the Yankees well in terms of navigating a stacked division.
Veterans also bear a lot of responsibility. While age might be creeping up on him, Anthony Rizzo’s influence in the Bronx goes beyond his on-field output. He is a leader in the clubhouse and his unwavering presence at first base provided much-needed stability last year. But only if he stays healthy and maintains his .800+ OPS, can he be a crucial source of production in the heart of the lineup.

Another name that comes to mind is Gleyber Torres who has shown flashes of his offensive potential. But inconsistency has brought a lot of doubt to his career path. The arrival of Juan Soto has shifted him to second base; with this movement, the pressure to perform is high. Given that Torres can tap into his offensive prowess he can be a game-changer for the Yankees. After all, he is capable of providing consistent production at the plate as well as defensively. This shifts the attention to the defensive wizard.
Jose Trevino’s elite framing and game-calling were quick to transform the Yankees’ pitching staff in 2023. His offensive performance was a pleasant surprise. He is bound to be a valuable weapon if he brings back his .240 batting average. He could work wonders both behind the plate and at the bottom of the lineup.
