After retiring from the ballpark in 2014, Derek Jeter set an unwavering goal to become an MLB team owner in the second innings of his life. In little to no time, Captain Clutch’s ownership dream became a reality in 2017, after his three-year hiatus from baseball came to an end.

All through his 20-year-long Yankees career, like any other die-hard Pinstriper, Jeter stood at the forefront of the BoSox rivalry. But after arriving in Miami, Jeter met an uncanny resemblance with the BoSox ownership, Fenway Sports Group.

A rare Jeter-Red Sox matchup:

Back in 2002, John Henry, founder of the Fenway Sports Group, and owner of the Boston Red Sox since 2003 was once an owner of the Miami Marlins. Yes, you read that right… After John Henry sold the Marlins in 2002 for $158.5 million, he moved to purchase the Boston Red Sox.

As a result, both Derek Jeter and the $4 billion man, John Henry, were part of the Miami Marlins’ ownership for a short period. John Henry from 1991 to 2001, and Derek Jeter from 2017 to 2021.

In April 2021, Jeter stepped down for the Marlins after a tenure of four years. Does that mean he will soon approach bidding for the Boston Red Sox?

Did Derek Jeter have a successful ownership stint with the Marlins?

While Derek Jeter entered the ownership with a long list of expectations, his journey onward with the Marlins was not completely upwards. Ex-New York Yankees captain Don Mattingly also spoke about Jeter’s new ownership stint in 2017 filled with praises and high expectations.

He said, ?What Derek?s been able to do with his career, who he is as a person, there?s nothing in there that leads you to believe that he?s not going to be successful with really whatever he wants to do.? By the books, he carried the Marlins to their first postseason appearance in 18 years, but at the same time, he also led the highly criticized trade of Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees.
