Fan 1: ‘What time is it?’
Fan 2: ‘It’s time for the Yankees to start trimming their facial hair.’
Fan 1: ‘Ah, Not Again! Look at Austin Wells!’
Fan 2: ‘Why? What’s the big deal about it anyway?’
… and there goes yet another (hypothetical) back-and-forth about the much-debated policy of the Yankees “banning beards and long hair”.
There has been a long-standing discussion among fans about whether this policy is obsolete. On one hand, some strongly believe that a clean-shaven face no longer represents professionalism and that shaving shouldn’t be a mandate. On the other, some fans find the matter too trivial to even discuss. Beard or no beard, the Yankees fans make brilliant points. Thanks to Austin Wells!

The New York Yankees’ Chronicles of the Follicles
A picture of the Yankees catcher surfaced on social media and the 24-year-old looks nothing but adorable with his moustache and stubble. The Bronx nation went bonkers over this look, reigniting their informal petition to eliminate the 47-year-old policy. After all, “Austin Wells just emphasized it.” Well, he’s not the only player who looks dapper with facial hair.

Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Giancarlo Stanton, and former Bronx Bombers like Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks have all looked spectacular when their mutton chops stay untouched. Isn’t it about time that the Yankees finally give up the tradition that holds close to no relevance in the present? Would George Steinbrenner have approved of the change?
His iron-fist rule was more about discipline rather than just appearance. Sure, the no-beard policy (read ‘Discipline’) led Steinbrenner’s empire to reign for the majority of the 1900s. But there is little to no evidence that failing to adhere to the US Air Force rule of beard prohibition, which btw planted that seed in Steinbrenner’s mind, would mean straight-up indiscipline. Fans have been vocalizing their opinions; some agree, some disagree.

The Anti-Beard Plea Reignites on Social Media
Drooling over how the Bronx Bombers look and have looked during the off-season is a good enough reason to start voting for or against the rule. As the chronicles of the follicles unfold, social media starts to flood.
Commenting on Austin Well’s “elite” stache, fans supported the look.
Helll naw… his stache is elite

Ardent followers of the rule were quick to defend the sanctity of the Yankees tradition, rather brutally.
Nope. Bad take. If you wants beards don’t be a fan.

Another fan called it out saying, “You can’t play the “tradition” card”.
They might as well get rid of it.
You can't play the "tradition" card when you get rid of The House That Ruth Built.

One strong comment, backed by pure logic, surfaced, giving the discussion another angle.
Like I’ve said before, the only ones that complain about facial hair are the fans. Sure the players might grow a beard in the offseason but, they never complain when they shave it off. Which proves they will do anything to be a Yankee.

Yankees Fans advocating in favor of the beard straight up said, “.. And they look so weird without a beard”.

As a Yankees fan, I always found it weird about the no facial hair policy. Lile why do we have it in place?
Like theres certain players who are known for their beards, but then come to New York and have to shave them. And they look so weird without a beard

Will the no-facial hair rule stand the test of time and continue to exist as a signature trait of the Yankees or will it dissolve in the profuse modernity? Either way, the fans don’t seem to have concluded.

Whether the New York Yankees leadership will consider this rule is also still in question. Amidst all the hairy hullabaloo, one thing is clear: Beard or no beard, a Yankees fan stands strongly opinionated. But is that enough to change their instruction manual?
