The New York Yankees’ dream to behind the 2024 season with a bang was taking off well. Until their last game. Their bubble burst and after cruising to a 5-0 record which they accomplished for the first time in over 3 decades. While their bats went silent and pitching faltered, the Arizona Diamondbacks emerged victorious in a disappointing 7-0 loss on Tuesday night.

While the beginning of the season was filled with thunderous swings that propelled the Yankees to victory in their first five games, something changed when they played against the D-Backs in Phoenix. Despite “We’ve been coming from behind a couple times this year already”, the Yankees might have just celebrated a bit too early.

There were multiple aspects of the game that indicated that the Yankees might lose this one. Zac Gallen, the D-Backs’ ace, pitched six shutout innings. Moreover, Christian Walker hit a three-run home run which pushed the 2023 World Series runner up to a lead. Leading Arizona’s offense was Blaze Alexander, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

His teammate Ketel Marte too had a strong showing. He collected two hits in five at-bats with two runs scored. Their combined efforts showed the previously undefeated New York Yankees to their first loss of this season.

Anthony Rizzo who went 0-for-4 said, “[Gallen] was just hitting his spots. Especially with two strikes, he wasn’t really missing over the middle of the plate at all. He had a good lane with his fastball/curveball and then the changeup off of that. … He just shut us down.” Perhaps the Yankees weren’t ready for such a dominant performance from ‘the Snakes’ after all.

Zac Gallen – The Dominant Force Which Took the Yankees Down

The Yankees who earlier threatened the teams of MLB putting four baserunners on in the first two innings, witnessed the tables turn. However, Gallen dodged each jam displaying his seasoned-magician skills. In the end, the Yanks were left stranded and frustrated. From there, he cruised smoothly mowing down 12 of the final 14 batters he faced.

Commenting on the situation, Aaron Boone weighed in, “We had some early chances. We made him work hard, but he shut the door every time. He was sharp, locating his pitches on the edges, and just seemed unfazed by the pressure.” Eventually, with the loss of the Yankees, it indicates that the screws need to be tightened a bit as the season proceeds.
