The MLB community is still buzzing with attention-grabbing news of teams pursuing remarkable talents to bolster their force. The New York Yankees are no exception as after accumulating enough strength to their pitching segment, the team is still chasing the Cy Young Winner, Blake Snell, to heighten their strength even more. However, Snell’s demand for a longer association with a massive contract amount has been hindering their pursuit. Now, as the spring training has already hit the ground, Snell brings a bit of flexibility to his demands, following Bellinger’s vestige. How likely it will be favorable for the Pinstripes?

The New York Yankees, chasing the biggest title, World Series since 2009, encountered one of the most disheartening seasons in 2023 with an extended list of injured players. Thus, they intend to acquire as much strength as possible before stepping into the next season, with an aim to signing the former Padres star. But unfortunately, Snell’s flexibility poses another significant concern for them, giving them substantial reason to frown.

According to the renowned MLB insider Jon Heyman, following the footsteps of Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell finally brings some flexibility to his demand, as he shows an interest in the short-term contract. Jon remarked, “Snell is willing to do one of those Bellinger-type deal, Short-term deal with opt outs.” However, the undoubtedly favorable news appears not-so-good for the Yankees.

Per Heyman, Snell is looking for a short-term deal with opt-out options, which is “an issue for the Yankees.” Because “high AAV means high tax.” Moreover, “they(Yankees) aren’t keen on the idea of the pitcher having a chance to opt out after only one or two years.” Thus, the possibilities of a deal between the two are regarded as “extremely low”.

With Snell agreeing for a shorter deal, other giant teams entering the race seems obligatory.

Teams are counting on their fate

Before competing on the field, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants seem competing against the Yankees in a talent acquisition rivalry.

Despite building a talent-packed roaster list with icons like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers show enough interest in signing Snell following his agreeing to the short-term deal. Similarly, another team, the San Francisco Giants, is also keeping a connection with Scott Boras, the agent of Blake Snell.
