After a bright start, it looks like the New York Yankees are losing pace this offseason. Instead of speeding ahead after their blockbuster trades for Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, the Yankees have gone a little off the rails. Those trades led to a huge shortage of pitchers that the Pinstripes are still trying to fill. While it looks like they’ve identified Dylan Cease as a possible savior, the potential high demands of the Chicago White Sox could put a wrench in the Yankees’ plan.

Dylan Cease has been a desirable target of many teams this offseason. The fact that he has two years left in his contract makes him an attractive acquisition. But this also makes it more likely for the White Sox to demand top-of-the-line prospects. With most of their prospects already gone, are the Yankees ready to give away the very best of what remains?

It’s undeniable that Juan Soto was a necessary acquisition for the Yankees. Having lacked a game-changing left-hander for a long time, the Pinstripes used most of their prospects in that trade. Now Dylan Cease too is a necessary target, but the potential demands of the White Sox could include two players the Yankees specifically denied, including in the Soto trade – OF Jasson Dominguez and RHP Chase Hampton.

Popular Executive and analyst Jim Duquette, including both Dominguez and Hampton, makes this a highly shocking list. Both of these players are probably the most important prospects of the New York Yankees currently and ones who could play a huge role in the Bombers’ future.

In his brief run, Dominguez showed his high raw potential. The Yankee Faithful believes that once he returns from his injury, ‘The Martian’ can become a long-term part of their outfield. Hampton, too, has shown his high potential.

The other two pitchers that are a part of this trade proposal are RHP Will Warren or LHP Brock Selvidge. Perhaps that’s why the trade talks for Dylan Cease seem at risk of ending prematurely. Especially now with the list of suitors for the 28-year-old growing.

Joel Sherman’s New York Post recently reported that the Mets have also begun enquiring for Cease. With perhaps the most urgent need for a pitcher, the Amazin’ Mets can prove to be a major competitor. Though Sherman currently doesn’t rate them as favorites, instead giving that title to the Baltimore Orioles.

The prospect-rich Orioles have always been ahead in the Cease trade talks. They have an inexhaustible supply of prospects, but here’s a catch – do the White Sox like the Orioles’ premium prospects? That’s a question that could make or break the offseason of the Yankees.
