Social media is running wild with its mockery of the team, especially given its status as the highest-paying MLB franchise. The club boasts big names like Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor. The pitching staff isn’t lacking either, with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Edwin Diaz, although the latter is unfortunately on the IL. Yet, the stats remain dismal.

Verlander returned from the IL in May but seemed surprised at the team’s direction. He recently gave a dazed response to a reporter, for which an MLB analyst mocked him brutally.

To the $86 million Mets signee, the MLB team with the highest payroll in the league would mean talented players. After all, so did the fans, even if many were cautious. However, the season is almost halfway, and the only thing the Mets can boast is the fourth-worst NL record.

In a recent SNY interview, Verlander told the press, “I didn’t see it coming.” While he says the team will improve, fans only focused on his first line. Of course, everyone saw it coming, they said. And among that volley of derisive comments was Barstool Sports’ Frank Fleming.

He retweeted the post, putting Verlander under fire with just four words, “I saw it coming,” echoing thousands of others. Fleming is a superfan of the New York team, but it would dishearten even the most loyal to this display.

All expectations have been lost. The team that many expected to take the league by storm at the start of 2023 has reached an anticlimactic midpoint. Out of 30 MLB teams, the New York Mets currently stand at 23. It’s not the top 10, not even the top 20 for the team with the mind-blowing paychecks.
