They say baseball is a pitcher’s game. He doesn’t always operate at full power but if he decides to, the man in control of the ball can decide the fate of the game. MLB has many pitching talents but none quite like Edwin Diaz. Closer for the New York Mets, the 29-year-old broke records within months of his MLB debut. While he’s currently on the injured list for a World Baseball Classic celebration gone wrong, Diaz is spending his time off wisely.

Fresh off of a successful run with the Seattle Mariners, the Puerto Rican player’s first year with the Mets turned out to be rather disappointing. But since then, Diaz has more than established his reputation. His current contract at $102 million and five years reflects how invaluable he is to the Mets. The Steve Cohen-owned team may be deep-pocketed but it’s the most lucrative contract ever signed by a relief pitcher. And recently, he spent his paycheck on a fun blingy item!

While Diaz heals from his injury, he is investing in some fun accessories for himself. TMZ reported that the Mets player has a new diamond chain worth an eye-popping $250,000. The necklace features the number 38 – Diaz’s jersey number – as well as a trumpet. The latter is of course a reference to the song “Narco” by Timmy Trumpet, to which the closer takes the mound during Mets games at Citi Field.

TMZ also reported that Diaz commissioned the flashy item to New York jeweler Victor Rodriguez, who gave additional details about the pricey piece of jewelry. While it’s made of F-color stones and VS diamonds, a custom bracelet also accompanies the necklace.

Diaz can certainly afford it! While this piece of news has fans’ ears perked up, they’re eager to know when he might be back on the field.

Could Diaz be back to the New York Mets sooner rather than later?

Diaz is expected to miss most of the 2023 season because of a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. While fortunately, it’s not career-ending, as many expected at first, the injury will take significant time to heal. But a recent appearance at Citi Field throwing balls has fans excited. While David Robertson has temporarily replaced Diaz, his Mets teammates also want to see him back.

“It’s very exciting,’’ said pitcher Adam Ottavino about how well Diaz seems to be doing. “I just want our guy back. He seems great and is saying he can throw 95 [mph] right now. I just want our guy back and the trumpets to play.”
