Why put off everything until tomorrow when half the work can be done today? There’s a chance that the New York Mets might be looking to follow that sentiment. While it looked it a far-fetched idea, when one starts to think about it, signing Jordan Montgomery or the Cy Young winner Blake Snell looks logical. Now with Spring Training starting soon, speculations are growing that the Queens could be looking to do just that.

While the team has invested in a bunch of pitchers, they haven’t made a killer signing yet. Though, it can be attributed to their intentions of treating 2024 as a transition year. But even then, there’s a reason why going for Snell or Monty could prove to be beneficial in the long run.

The heartbreaking run of the Mets has continued into the offseason. Despite a disastrous season, the team hasn’t done much to alleviate the issues. Instead, they’ve chosen to put some bandages to cover up the wounds until they perform surgery in 2025. However, just how many things are the Mets going to deal with next season?

Empire Writes Back said, “Landing either Montgomery and Snell will make the team better in the short-term while also allowing them to focus elsewhere in 2025 free agency.” This speculation has been growing among the fans for a long time. Is putting off everything till 2025 a good idea?

The Mets’ issues stretch beyond their pitching. Their hitting lacks good support for Pete Alonso, who is getting ready to leave next season. With both the offense and defense lacking in quality, with a payroll that’s in the top 3, the Mets certainly have a lot of work on their hands. As of now, the Mets have added a few players for one or two years at max.

Clearly, they are going for temporary solutions right now. But players like Snell and Monty don’t become available every year. Plus the chance to get them at a cheaper price? That’s even rarer. Especially as they’ll solve a big issue in the Mets organization.

Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery could be a long-term solution

Yes, the payroll of the Mets is over $300 million. Above all, a huge amount of it is being paid to Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander to play elsewhere. So the fear of the Queens Side is understandable, but there’s a need here. The Mets have Kodai Senga, but he has no support. Any of Snell and Monty could play that role brilliantly for a few years.

It’s this idea that is turning these speculations louder. Above all, the Mets were ready to pay $325 million for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, so it is known that they still have the stomach for a big deal. Could one of these two be the one?
