Dedniel Nunez was one of the biggest and brightest surprises for the New York Mets in 2024. The right-handed reliever showed some electric stuff, and his composure is something people pointed to as way beyond his years. In just 25 appearances, he posted a 2.31 ERA with 48 strikeouts and a 0.91 WHIP. He looked like the missing piece that the Mets could rely on for the long haul.

But then fate hit a speedbreaker! Just as quickly as Nunez rose to fame, he fell off, too. A strained right tendon derailed his season last August itself. It simply left the fans and team wondering—what now? Moreover, the updates on his recovery came sparingly from the team.

In November, though, MLB insider Anthony DiComo reported that all was progressing well. But now, as the new season is approaching, this optimism has taken a hit again.

His recent X post says that according to Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza, Dedniel Nunez won’t be appearing in the Grapefruit League games “anytime soon.” While the team claims that he is healthy, they are being extremely cautious about bringing him in. But there is good news as well.

The New York Mets still believe that he might be ready for Opening Day. However, no absolute guarantee!

What’s your perspective on:

Is Dedniel Nunez the missing piece for the Mets, or just another injury-prone player?

Have an interesting take?

This is a rather delicate situation. Nunez has made strides to be a key player behind their closer Edwin Diaz. But the New York Mets can’t afford to rush him back and cause another setback. And for a team that is looking as strong as it is, unnecessary risk is not the smartest idea. For now, patience is the name of the game.
