The New York Mets have consistently spent money on players since Steve Cohen took over the ownership after the 2020 season. This has continued in 2022 as well, as the Mets bolster their squad in preparation for the 2023 MLB season. Additionally, the Mets may not be done signing players as there is still time to make moves.

Cohen seems okay with spending money to win games and build a successful baseball team, but a startling report has come out stating the amount of money Cohen has spent so far this year.

Steve Cohen has spent $400 million this offseason

According to a report by Anthony DiComo, Cohen has spent $400 million on contracts this offseason. And that counts as slightly more than 2% of his reported net worth. The $400 million includes both free agents and players that are re-signing with the team. In a Tweet, DiComo said, “Mets owner Steve Cohen has spent almost $400 million on new player contracts this offseason, or a little more than 2 percent of his reported net worth.”

$400 million is a huge amount to spend on new contracts, but Cohen is happy to spend money if the team wins. And seeing as how it’s only around 2% of his reported market value, it probably might not be such a big deal for the billionaire owner.
