Despite having a decorated baseball career, Jose Canseco had probably the most controversial career in Major League Baseball. Had it not been for his countless controversies, Canseco could have been an MLB Hall of Famer by now.
But his destiny was something else. Debuted in the 1985 season, Canseco bid farewell to baseball in the 2001 season. During his 17 years in baseball, Canseco won everything in the game. However, a few years after his retirement, the Oakland Athletics legend ran out of money and tried his hands at boxing.

Notably, Canseco had a failed marriage with his ex-wife Jessica Canseco and ended up losing an enormous amount of money to his wife in divorce. To get financially settled, Canseco challenged an ex-NFL player for a boxing game for $50,000. But Canseco faced defeat in the ring, too. While sharing this incident, the former MLB star lost his cool when the interviewer did not get the facts right.
Jose Canseco is a kind of his own
With 462 home runs from the plate and two World Series titles with two different teams, Jose Canseco is the ultimate legend of the game. A 6-time All-Star and a Rookie of the Year Award, Canseco entertained an era in baseball. It is a pity that he ruined his legacy with his several controversies.
Earlier in 2021, while talking to DJ Vlad, Canseco opened up about his boxing match with the former NFL player Vai Sikahema. He also factually corrected Vlad when he said the match was for $30,000.
“Let’s get our numbers correct here… There is so many rumors out there, so many correct rumors. I think we are here, to tell the truth… Never knocked me out, incorrect… So let’s talk about the truth. The rest is just perception…,” Jose Canseco said.

Before challenging and facing Sikahema, Canseco did not know that his opponent was superior to him in boxing. He challenged Sikahema for the fight because the MLB legend needed the money.
“$50,000 dollars, I needed the money. I was going through a very hard time. And it was supposed to be more celebrity-style boxing… I did not realize he was a golden gloves boxer. He had a lot of boxing experience,” added Canseco.
