The LA Angels have been unlucky or unskilled depending on who you ask. But one thing is for sure. They have underachieved. Despite hosting several All-Stars on their roster, their post-season laurels have been limited. However, that looks set to change in 2022. With the season starting slowly, the LA Angels’ tandem of Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout have taken it to the next level with their hitting displays, even snagging back-to-back home runs against the Tampa Bay Rays in their series opener. And the fans are all here for it.

With injuries repeatedly plaguing either Trout or Ohtani, 2022 is the first season that we have truly seen the two dominate in tandem, and Angels fans will be welcoming the display. In their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, both the star batters were in full flow from home plate. And with Mike Trout being intentionally walked only for Ohtani to score his first career Grand Slam, the Angels won with the 11-3 scoreline. And their reactions on Twitter did not disappoint.

Fans weren’t the only ones getting excited either. Even experienced MLB coverage professionals were thoroughly happy to see the Angels’ performance on the night.

And while some fans were just happy with the display, many began to think about this team in a larger context. About the impact that this team can have as the season goes on.

With one fan proclaiming both Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout as the Greatest of all time, it’s safe to say, emotions were running high.

One situation even led fans to type out Ohtani’s first home run instead of the true achievement. While Ohtani has had several home runs to date, the hit marked his career’s first Grand Slam.

Ohtani and Trout – A reliable tandem?

Both Ohtani and Trout are generational talents that excel at hitting the ball. And with the two showing peak performance at the same time, the Angels are bound to excel as time goes on. The day, however, did mark a unique achievement for the two.

And while respect among teammates is always high, Ohtani seemed to harbor a special place for Trout as a player too. Speaking a few days earlier, Ohtani had clarified how much he respects the now 31-year-old and his place in the team.

And the feeling is mutual. With Mike Trout graciously handing over the Angels’ celebratory cowboy hat as they homered back-to-back.

And perhaps the respect is well-founded too. Trout’s moonshot set up his 161st home run in the Angels’ home ballpark. He drew clear of the previous record-holder in Tim Salmon with the hit. And while he was already a legend for the Halos, this will only stand to grow his bid for a Hall of Fame spot.

And while fans will be left wondering why their team doesn’t have a lineup with such power right now, Angels fans will certainly be sitting happily atop their perch.

And while Trout and Ohtani have long been on the Angels’ roster they haven’t had a commensurate run to mark their dominance over the sport. While Trout was out for a majority of the seasons that Ohtani hit his stride, the opposite was just as true. 2022, however, finally sees the two showing dominance together.
