The New York Yankees‘ plague of injuries continues. The 2023 season has been more than underwhelming as all expectations have been met with disappointment. Chance is a funny thing because the injuries seem to affect players right when they’re most needed. Aaron Judge may be back but performing on an injured toe may not be the best long-term decision. At least he wasn’t out for the season, unlike some other Yankees.

The club’s offensive power was already suffering this season, while their hopes lay with the pitching staff. But with Domingo German in alcohol rehab and Luis Severino struggling, Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole can’t man the ship on their own. Other pitching staff has also been underperforming and now it seems like Nestor Cortes Jr. won’t be able to get on the mound anytime soon either.

Earlier this season, Nasty Nestor had to go on the IL for a left rotator cuff strain. It sidelined him for two months and in what was supposed to be a comeback, he was removed from the lineup again. The issue? The same as before, and it means that the pitcher has likely thrown his last ball of the season.

The Yankees removed him from the lineup at one of the worst moments, which was prior to Friday’s series opener against the Miami Marlins. Surprisingly, the team ended up winning 9-4 at LoanDepot Park with the efforts of the captain and the kid, Anthony Volpe. But the rotation is sure to feel Cortes’ absence in the coming games.

Although team manager Aaron Boone said surgery is not in the talks right now, it’s still a worrisome time in the Bronx. “It’s definitely tough. If we’re going to make a run at it, we need everybody healthy — not only myself but [Carlos] Rodón and all the other pitchers. It’s tough to swallow this right now,” Cortes told Bryan Hoch.

Luis Severino, unfortunately. The starter has struggled all throughout this season and even fans have taken pity on him, something the Bronx rarely does. According to many, at a time when he should be taking time off from the majors in Triple-A, the Yankees’ methods of returning him to his old form seem to have pressurized him.

Sevy is scheduled to start against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, the second of a three-game series, in a wildly unpopular move. Putting the stumbling ace against a home-run-happy team simply seems like a recipe for disaster, and fans are sure it will haunt the Yankees later.
